since petsitting pretty much full time these past couple years, i’m really feeling drawn to working with animals professionally.
anyone else feel the same way? i’m looking after some birds right now and am pleasantly surprised at how affectionate they are, and how attached we’re getting.
it’s been in the back of my mind to get into training rescue dogs or other types of assistance dogs, but now I don’t want to limit myself to just dogs! although they clearly bring so much joy

I don’t know if you own a residence or are a digital nomad, but if you have a place to call home I highly recommend starting a pet sitting business. I have had one since 2004 in the U.S., which I originally started due to my love of animals and needing to have a flexible schedule for my special-needs daughter when she was in middle and high school. I can’t speak for other countries, but here in the U.S. the overhead is very minimal (I pay for yearly membership in Pet Sitters International, through which I also get insured and bonded). Through all these years, I take in as much or as little as I need to and want. Some of my clients hire me for overnight sits, which I love - and which of course is more lucrative than a visit or four (dogs usually require four visits in a 24-hour period) each day. I especially love caring for farm animals. But many pet sitters in my local network only take care of cats, dogs, and other small pets. There have been phases of my life when I had 10-12 dog walks a day Mon.-Fri., though now my body can’t handle that much strenuous activity, so at this point I just take care of pets while their owners are away. I don’t need to advertise much, but leaving my business card with vets brings in plenty of new clients. Just like being a sitter with THS, I develop wonderful bonds with the pets and their owners. It’s a business I have such a passion for and highly recommend.
You mentioned an interest in dog training. Some of my local colleagues have great expertise in that and offer it along with dog walking/care when the owners go away.
