Dealing with homeowner's lies

Hello,

I’m looking for a little support please.

I recently completed an extended sit, the most challenging in almost a decade of housesitting through THS. I found the homeowner particularly demanding, and lacking in consideration and appreciation.

Her dog was mischievous and poorly trained. He would pull terribly on walks, dragging me down the street and causing me whiplash because he’d chase after other dogs or birds while on the lead. The first night after his owner’s departure he barked through the night so I didn’t get any sleep. Knowing I would be there for a few months, I phoned the homeowner and stated that if this was a sign of things to come, I wouldn’t be able to continue. I was exhausted, having driven a long distance to get there, and I made the grave error of being emotional. That resulted in my first ever four-star review, where she also docked stars for reliability and self-sufficiency because I indicated I was upset for having been kept awake all night, leading her to believe she would need to pay for dog care for the subsequent four months, even though I ultimately stayed the duration.

But the reason I am seeking support is the response to my review of her. I left a considered, unemotional and factual two-star review, detailing the issues I had experienced. She has responded turning literally EVERYTHING back on me.

A couple of examples. I had to change plans with my previous homeowner in order to ensure there was overlap with the current homeowner, as she didn’t want to leave the dog alone for two hours between my arrival and her departure. Please note, I had visited her and the dog one evening the previous month in order to put her mind at ease, so this would not have been our first meeting. I went to some effort to do this and the lovely homeowner had to enlist the help of a family member to take over. In her response to my review, she said that it is customary for there to be an overlap and the issue of leaving the dog for two hours before my arrival should never have existed in the first place.

Communication was the biggest demand placed on me, both before and during the sit, where I felt she used me to bridge the gap between her attachment to her dog and her desire to travel for an extended period. She contacted me months before the sit began asking for advice about how to calm her dog during firework season. I was happy to help, but the regular communication continued for several months while I was on other sits. It got to the point I had to tell her that I was dealing with challenges associated with another sit I was on, the implication being that I couldn’t also absorb the guilt she was continually expressing and seeking my reassurance for.

In her response to my review, she stated that the reason for the prolonged contact was to provide me with ‘emotional support’ because I had expressed how difficult the sit I was on was! The audacity! I am honestly in awe that she could turn me setting a boundary around to suggest I was seeking her support.

She has done this for pretty much every point I raised in my review, making herself the victim and me the ‘bad guy’. Admittedly, she has shown her attitude towards sitters, including stating she ‘let’ me stay in her home and I sincerely hope any sitter will sense the tone in her response and decide against sitting for her.

I have never left anything other than four or five star reviews, and I feel she has gone to some effort to refute every point I have made. I guess I’m just looking for a morsel of compassion as I feel a little vulnerable. Thank you.

Thank you for leaving an honest review

Sorry you’re going through this situation. It sounds like her response may backfire on her.

Put this behind you as soon as you can.

Ugh; that sounds so awful, and especially having had to deal with the stress of it over such a long period of time. I think I’d almost have a level of ptsd if I’d been on a sit like that.

It does boggle the mind sometimes, what some people feel they’re entitled to from someone who is essentially working for them for free, and how they could treat a person who is performing such a huge & personal service for them. I really do see my hosts as friends/extended family in most cases (or at least try to treat them that way), & hope they feel similarly. Such a disappointment when they don’t.

The good news is that these situations are the exception rather than rule, and as you’re an experienced sitter, I know you will shake it off and move on. I do hope you’ll take a little time off if you can, though, to wash the taste out of your mouth before the next sit — or at the least try to do something special for yourself…you deserve it.

As for the reviews, I wouldn’t worry too awfully much. I have no doubt that the host ended up hurting their case vs helping it, and most people who do this for any length of time quickly learn how to read between the lines in these situations. One over-the-top rant by a single host amongst a string of effusive reviews is definitely going to look completely out of place.

Wishing you the very best, and a marvelous marvelous ‘next sit’ to help fade this unfortunate experience from memory as quickly as possible.

:hugs::smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I take it that this was the first time the HO used THS? Given her anxiety, she should’ve never started with such a long sit. Unfortunately, you took the brunt of all her fears, anxiety panic…

Your review should forewarn other potential sitters. Hopefully, after this experience, they’ll be more chill.

As for you, given the amount of time you’ve been pet-sitting, I guess this experience was inevitable. You stuck it out, so congratulations on that. Many would’ve left early. Good to know you’re someone that can be relied on.

May your next sit be in paradise with extremely well-behaved animals and calm HO.

Thank you for such a lovely response. I do feel like I have a level of PTSD. Not to be dramatic, but this was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, not just in housesitting. It has ultimately led me to decide to give up housesitting once my booked sits are over.

I agree completely about the entitlement of some homeowners, and the fact that they are in the minority. I mentioned the extent of the imbalance in my review, which the HO only confirmed in her reply with the language she used. I had hoped that it would be collaborative and mutual, as has been the case with almost every other sit I’ve completed, and some of my closest friends are people I’ve housesat for. Not the case with this one though. The sit I am on currently is such a salve compared to the last one, and has reminded me of how wonderful housesitting (and homeowners) can be. I think the damage is done though, and I can appreciate why some people feel hesitant to write honest, thoughtful reviews, even in the blind system. There is definitely a vulnerability to having your experience put on a public forum for future applicants, only to have every element refuted!

So lovely, thank you  This was the homeowner’s second sit, though the first was only a week long, and she used it as an example of what I should be doing, i.e. ‘My last sitters had no problem arriving three hours early…’ The red flags were there long before the sit started but I wanted to stick it out to ensure I didn’t cause any difficulties for the HO on her travels. That turned out to be to my own detriment.

My current sit is idyllic compared to the last one in terms of homeowner, animals and location, which I am very grateful for!

I’m so sorry you had to go through this.

I’ve found out in my own life that some people are not able to tolerate other people’s boundaries. It just doesn’t compute to them that your needs are different than their needs. There is nothing that can be done to change or work with them. The only solution is to better understand and communicate your needs early so that you can catch the red flags and avoid people who aren’t going to “see” you.

All the best to you.

Thank you

I think this is a very accurate assessment of the homeowner: she wasn’t able to tolerate my boundaries, or recognise my needs as being of any importance since they differed from hers. I do find it concerning that she may get other sitters in the future and hope my review deters them.

I saw red flags early to the extent I spoke to people about whether I should walk away. Ultimately, it was too close to the start date for either of us to make alternative arrangements, so I stuck it out but I’d encourage anyone not to override those warning signs! I certainly won’t be in the future.

wow that HO is something else!!! So sorry you had a master manipulator on your hands. Glad you wrote an honest review for future sitters. I hate that you want to quit sitting and I hope this feeling passes soon enough. I’m wondering if you replied to her review of you, If you did not, would you consider replying to it? I am not sure what you would say but feel it might give you some peace of mind to explain to others your position. I am so glad that your current sit feels like salve. Hang in there! :purple_heart:

Sounds terrible, I can’t believe you made it through 4 months of this. It’s great you left an honest review. I would not worry about her reply to it at all.

Please research on YT and elsewhere Narcissistic Personality Disorder, as occasionally in life we come across these character types and it creates a lot of angst at the time but also ongoing longer term puzzlement as to what the heck happened! The fact that you’re still impacted by the experience was my first clue, the next was the issue of them disrespecting your clear boundaries. The third clue was that strategising you as a private resource, almost behaving as if they owned you. It’s just my speculation but contact with such a person can have a profound effect, unless you recognise the psychological processes going on.
Best wishes to you, I hope this is in some way helpful.

I take my hat off to you @anon52587707 for staying the full duration of this sit. The response this host has made to your review will set off alarm bells to future sitters. It should do you no harm as it all appears on her profile, not yours. Future sitters and hosts can easily check both reviews and any responses made, as you know, so I would not be too concerned at all. But I completely understand how gut wrenching it must be to read her nasty comments/accusations.

I hate to think this host has succeeded in making you consider not to continue sitting which you have enjoyed for a lengthy time. Don’t let her win! You know there are wonderful hosts with amazing pets, like the sit you’re now on. Maybe take a break to think about it carefully instead of reacting too quickly because of this unpleasant person. Wishing you the best in whatever you decide to do.

Thank you! The responses on here are restoring my faith
I felt trapped for the duration of the sit which is why I want to give up sitting completely. It felt very much like I was beholden to this person and, even though I stuck it out, I didn’t get anything out of it and have left feeling quite burned out. Housesitting kind of lost its shine as a result.

As for my response to her review, I’ve written a couple of drafts but have decided to wait a while before posting anything. There are several things I could say to counter what she’s written, but I don’t want to come across as she has in her response to my review, which is defensive and unpleasant. My response will be brief and as pleasant as possible, but I’m not sure I’m quite there yet

Thank you, it is very helpful. I know a little about Narcissistic PD and suspected this may be the case, but I’m also aware that it’s a term that’s frequently used to describe someone who is actually just selfish and unkind! I’ll look into it further as it may help to untangle some of the confusion and complete awe I’m currently feeling. For two people to interpret the same interaction so differently is baffling to me.

I’ve been questioning myself quite a lot, until I remembered I had written her a very clear e-mail discussing boundaries before the sit began, as I wanted to clarify that I didn’t feel her current demands were acceptable. I wrote it on the THS platform so it was more ‘official’ and it has served as confirmation that my interpretation was correct, and that I wasn’t seeking her emotional support as she claims. I’m just a bit flummoxed by it all!

Thanks @temba for your encouragement and kind words.
I am hoping her response will raise alarm bells for future sitters. I think the fact it’s so long and tries to counter many of the points I’ve mentioned is an alarm bell in itself. Why not take accountability for just one thing, rather than claiming I’m fabricating the entire experience? Certainly, it has made me regret ever agreeing to sit for her and all the effort I put in.

To be honest, I was already feeling quite isolated from this lifestyle, so her sit has only served to confirm it may be time to throw in the towel. I’d hoped that staying in one place for four months would afford me more stability than moving every couple of weeks, but it didn’t really work out that way! I’m booked up until next September though. Enough people have rebooked me that her review won’t do too much damage to my reputation!

The facts, as immediately apparent to any future sitter or host: she left you 4 stars overall, docking for reliability and self-suffiency. You left a 2 star review and detailed your experience in a factual, unemotional manner. She is a relatively new host, you are an experienced sitter with a consistent 5 star history.

When the trauma of injustice fades, you’ll see this has done your reputation no harm. It sounds like you primarily have to deal with the feelings this entitled host has provoked.

You’re feeling misunderstood and misrepresented, as clearly this host is attributing motives to you that aren’t your own.

Knickers to her! You know who you are and the reality of your experience, so try not to let her knock you sideways like this. You can’t change the way she sees things but you can learn from this and you’ve already recognised what you’d do differently, next time.

Nobody else is going to see this as a problem about you.

Chin up!

That’s so wise of you!

I can really relate to your situation. I hope you get over this soon.

Best wishes

Thank you so much, your assessment is spot on.
I have worried a lot about keeping a perfect five-star record and the fact that this sit and this homeowner has managed to blemish it, despite the fact it often required more from me than my full-time job. I went to great lengths to satisfy the homeowner and ultimately was marked down for something that happened on the very first night, and that was completely out of my control. It has made me question my people pleasing tendencies and shown that they only cause me harm. But you’re right, it’s not a reflection on me and I’ll get over it. It’s been a learning experience for sure.

I’ll suggest any response to her review of you maybe focus on your very salient point. I would use the response as an opportunity to summarize the sit as a whole rather than countering false or misleading claims in what your host wrote. Your honest review plus closing out the reviews with a “more work than a full time job … months longer than the sit … resulting in profound disappointment” will put the issue to rest for future hosts and, hopefully, you as well.

Alternately, you can skip a response entirely. Silence can say almost as much as a response with a lot less work.

Either way, I’m sorry you’re feeling the need to stop sitting. Good sitters are gold.
