Too bad that happened. TAKE PICTURES! Not that we would want to, but we would clean like you did because we cannot live in filth but upon leaving - I would not do anything extra.
Our first, and as yet, only sitter, did not leave us a review and that certainly had nothing to do with any cleanliness issues, as I spent the day of her arrival giving the house (which wasn’t dirty anyway) a thorough clean!
I was very disappointed to not receive a review off her as as well as this, we had been very accommodating, even offering her a cooked meal on her arrival and suggesting she help herself to any wine whilst we were gone (which she did).
Why, after how accommodating we had been, she would not leave us a review, is beyond me.
@catwoman4369 Did you actually ask her for a review? You can do this via the site or privately over WhatsApp. Did you ask her why she had not reviewed you? Some people simply don’t give reviews unless requested. Even if it is the unspoken expectation in THS.
She may have just forgotten but more likely (in my own experience as a sitter) something about the sit went wrong for her and she may have decided ‘no review is better than a poor review.’ Without more information its hard to speculate. But in future I’d suggest you directly request a review if one is not forthcoming in the first few days after a sit and if you’ve already submitted your review. Usually if one side reviews the other side is prompted to do theirs too. But if that does nor happen you need to follow it up directly.
I agree with @Lokstar in that you should politely ask why the sitter didn’t leave a review.
I did leave writing a view for my sitter to the last minute, to be honest - can sitters see when a review has been written? if so, by the time she saw I’d left her one, maybe it was too late for her to write one for me… That’s the only thing I can think of, as all the messages we had off here during her stay were absolutely fine.
Echoing others, they’re not all like that but it’s helpful to make sure when you’re vetting sits to see if you can get a sense of hygiene levels. We also call out in our profile that we like to keep things very neat and tidy.
As HO, we always offer to give folks a tour of our place.
Please do make sure to score them honestly for cleanliness in your review.
@catwoman4369 Delaying writing your review could have been the issue too. Most sitters really appreciate getting a review quickly so they can move on. They do get notified as soon as a review is written. The message encourages them to write theirs too, if they haven’t already, so that they can immediately read the new review. If you delayed your review the sitter may have felt you didn’t prioritise her enough. And, as you say, if she was waiting she may have run out of time.
Many sitters are still conditioned to the old system of open reviews where it was very common to wait for the host to review first before writing their own for fear of retaliation if they wrote anything negative. Blind reviews were brought in to try and change these patturns but many people are still very reluctant to write anything negative and may instead choose to write nothing.
The only real way to know is to ask her!
In future I’d suggest write your review in the first day or two after the sit ends and if you don’t receive your review soon after then directly request one either privately or via the App. Reviews are important both ways and they are the currency of THS.
We have two trips coming up soon and after these I will definitely be writing the reviews within days of our return, as I can only think that was the reason for not getting a review off our sitter last time.
Good plan! ![]()
