Our last sit was in a very large house (3 sitting rooms etc) and on our return home, our own house appeared to have shrunk by 75%! … until it slowly returned to its normal size over the following week. I fully anticipate that the opposite phenomenon will be in play next week as tomorrow we’re off to a 600 year old cottage with a higgledly piggledly collection of small rooms.
Does your pet sit accommodation change the view of your own home?
Yes @Home - we have had the same experience. We tend to sit in larger homes than our own and many have tiled or wooden floors. As much as I enjoy pet sitting I love coming home to my cosy home with carpets and excellent shower.
I have picked up some great design/storage/decoration ideas from our travels.
My house has been bigger than all of my sit homes — I choose to sit in densely urban settings for a change of pace, in contrast to how I live. Also, sits I’ve done abroad, those places tend to not have homes as big or as comfortable as the U.S. typically does.
When I return home, I feel very lucky and spoiled. I love nesting and having room to sprawl out, and the contrasts in sitting make me appreciate my home even more.
Sitting wise, I also prefer to take care of smaller places — less work. Even in roomier homes, I use few rooms. Like I’ve sat in multistory homes where I never even go upstairs or there are rooms where I’ve barely entered, and that was only because the pets would walk into them normally, so I didn’t want to deny them their regular freedom.
Something tangential: Sitting has made me realize how easy it is for me to fall in love with pets quickly. That’s made me less precious about my dog. It’s also very enjoyable to see how different pet personalities can be.
I sat in a studio apartment, 3rd floor walk up, for 2 weeks with a lovely cat. I went to the Laundromat, walked a lot, and used public transportation.
I loved every minute of it. But when I returned home I appreciated the luxury of having a washer/dryer, a car , and having a bedroom separate from the living area. Yes my home felt big and a thought "I have way too much stuff! "
I’ve sat in several recently built or rennovated city apartments – San Fransisco, DC – the glass and maybe metal types. While those apartments have modern touches – temperature controls, washer/dryers in unit, and always open kitchen/dining/livingroom areas, they are actually smaller than our old fashioned (but renovated) one bedroom, and am always amazed at how large my apartment seems. However, whenever we sit in a two bedroom, or house, I come back to that shrunk feeling.
I return to my boat, so everything feels a lot smaller! I always enjoy cooking in large kitchens and using the oven when I am sitting, as it is such a treat!
It also takes me a day to adjust to the boat movement too.
lol. Absolutely. Just finished a lovely sit in a VERY small house on a Greek island. Lots of memorabilia and stuff. Came home to our town house in Portugal and it seemed HUGE and a bit overly minimalist.
