Dying animals

I always worry what happens if a pet dies on my shift

So far, it hasn’t happened

I saw my first ever Woodpecker on a recent sit, veery special for me, and today I was able to get up close and personal with one, but for all the wrong reasons.

It was stunned, I think they hit the glass patio door, I don’t know, but poor thing was in a bad way

I tried to revive it with water, nothing

I went away to find a cardboard box to move it somewhere safe, where it might recover

sadly, when I returned, it was too late

poor gorgeous wee bird had perished.

At least it was not alone, and I had sat on the patio step talking to it before it went.

A bird flew into one of our glass doors and laid there. We let it be for a bit, to see whether it would recover, because sometimes they’re just stunned. We eventually went to get a shoebox, because we read that they can sometimes recover if you put them in a container somewhere dark and warm. But then it flew off before we returned with the box. Hope it was OK.

I wish that had been my outcome.

I’m so sorry, @RedLassie That’s such a sad moment, and your kindness to comfort the little bird meant it wasn’t alone at the end, and that’s something. Sending you a warm hug.

@RedLassie oh such a shame . What a beautiful bird I have not seen one before.

We had a better outcome when we heard a clunk on our patio roof and then a bird dropped down into the garden. We all got a fright! It was a bit dazed and just stayed there for awhile, but eventually made his way into our plants and was fine. So sorry that was not your outcome.

Aww :frowning: I’ve had wee birds expire after hitting my windows too. There really isn’t much you can do except, as mentioned, tuck them in a box and keep them quiet. Even if they’re not badly injured, they can just die of shock.
At least it didn’t suffer for long, and I think it’s lovely that you took the time to care about it and acknowledge the little soul :hugs:
