Elderly care?

Hi, I came across a sit that wanted care for a very elderly relative that lived next door. ThS say they review posted sits but I’m wondering at somebody posting on a pet site to get an elderly person monitored…that’s quite a responsibility!

That’s completely unacceptable.

THS do review sits the first time a home-owner posts but I dont think they do after that. They rely on the home-owner (and the sitter) reading and abiding by the guidelines.

absolutely shocking. What kind of family does that??

We’ve done similar on a few occasions for elderly mothers while pet sitting, but it’s not exactly been ‘care’ in our scenario. For ourselves it’s been a case of just giving a knock to see if they are ok every couple of days if we haven’t seen them about.

My partner’s mother is our concern while sitting, so we find it a pretty normal request, plus in all the places their elderly mothers have had amusing stories. We have just chit-chatted in the garden, same as we do with any normal neighbours that we happen to see.

We even took one to the hospital, but that was our choice to do so (she was fine, just precautionary, we were happy to help).

I’m in the UK, so if an elderly person needs proper help, a paramedic will visit them really quickly. An ambulance ‘can’ take a while, but a paramedic is usually there quick.

What is entailed ? Any more details ?

Its a 3 week sit, the very elderly person lives next door and is independent. I found it surprising to find a 3 week sit keeping an eye on a person rather than a pet. It could be a wonderful sit but equally it could be the opposite. Maybe with care costs these days its worth a try?

I’m also in the UK as is the sit. I’ve had experience in calling an ambulance for the elderly and also making ‘that’ phone call. Wonderful if it works out and you come away with an uneventfu but happyl sit but for a 90+ year old I wouldn’t want the responsibility. This person maybe sprightly and super fit,it just surprised to see them advertised on here

It all depends on what this entails ?

We once did a sit with an “independent “ elderly relative living next door.

The host asked us just to make sure that the cat who lived outdoors was fed .

The elderly relative had other ideas and asked us to help them with various errands . We didn’t mind for example picking up their newspaper or a few groceries while we were out and about for the day.

However, when they asked us to take them in our car to accompany them to a Drs appointment , we declined explaining that we had plans to go out for the day .

They got quite angry at this and said that their daughter was “paying us to look after them “ :woman_facepalming:t2:

@Sparklebug Are there any pets to look after or just the host’s home and the elderly person next door?

In 2023, I did a sit in a gorgeous Cotswold village where the hosts were taking their dog so I only had one chicken, a donkey (just to feed, no poop picking up) and the house, vegetable plot and garden to look after. The host’s mother lived next door (in her 90s) but was independent and would appreciate a daily visit. I explained I could not be responsible should anything happen to her. It was arranged for her son to come and take her to his place so I only checked on her (and walked her little dog around the village) for the first day. Hosts were very understanding of my stance.
