Emergency hospital stay

I had to go into hospital on 1.1.25 with PE and hope to get out soon. I had to cancel 2 sits and am now looking for the best places to stay to recover fully (can’t fly for 6 weeks after release). I have emergency funds to cover, but any suggestions on good, safe hotels, etc. would be awesome. I’m retired and am trying to watch my pennies, and this is getting expensive. I’ve tried to get last minute sits, but none have worked out. I’m in the UK. Just thought I’d check here for any tips.

Try Host a Sister @willisangela that might be a solution. #getwellsoon

If you put in your dates when searching for instance AirBnB or platforms like booking dot com, the hosts have in many cases put in substantial discounts for longer stays on the platform that is given automatically.

I also know several instances where different people in different countries have found somewhere they like on AirBnB and reached out with a message to inquire on price for a longer stay and been able to get a considerable lower price.

As January for sure must be low season many places in the UK, and as you are a solo traveller, I’m quite sure that you could have success on that route. You could inquire, and if the price isn’t what you can afford maybe even try to give a counter-offer.

The cheapest accommodation in the UK we have found is usually Travelodge and they used to give extra discounts for 5 days or more, especially in Jan/Feb, not sure about nowadays but they always seem to beat airbnb for us, but like others have said if you reach out to those on airbnb to enquire about a discount you never know you may be lucky.

Also, you could try spareroom.com where you have a private room but share the living spaces typically with the owner.

@willisangela I can’t help you with accommodation, but your post stroke a chord cause my partner has been admitted to hospital with PE while on a sit in France at the end of September.
He stayed in hospital for 12 days and, although still on bloodthinners, he’s had a pretty smooth recovery and is almost as good as new
Just wanted to wish you all the very best!

@willisangela, sorry to hear of your health hiccup. Hope that you recover quickly & fully.
An alternative idea is unoccupied “long-term” rental.
In late 2023, we were housesitting around Europe and really wanted to visit Madeira for a month or so. Zero housesit opportunities emerged. So few weeks out, we were reviewing accommodation options. Airbnb/Booking/etc was surprisingly expensive. We happened to spot a nice property listed on a website that was seeking long-term tenants … but was currently unoccupied. We contacted property agent and signed a one-month lease. While still not cheap (Madeira is pricey) then it was much much better value for money than Airbnb/etc. Partly as 30+ day rental avoids all the taxes for short-term accommodation. Disclosure - there was work involved … signing lease, paying security deposit, etc. Not sure if similar concept may work in UK. Mention idea as you noted six week period.
Good luck.

Ty, Colin. We’re in Portsmouth ATM but will head north when released. Next sit is in Derby on 24, so hopefully, not too much longer. Appreciate your taking the time to respond.

That’s hopeful to hear; thanks so much for the response. Same thing happened to me 4 years ago, but they didn’t put me on blood thinners, but now I know I will be on them forever. Glad your husband is well.

You may want to check into a lovely female dorm hostel, they offer private rooms as well. Simply put your price point in the booking or hostel world app. Be sure to check the website of the hostel as they may have age restrictions.
It is nice to be around others with the option to cook for yourself, get a cup of tea ect, some hostels include lovely healthy breakfast for a low cost and then at least one meal is without effort.
Wishing you a quick 100% recovery. Debra

Thanks, Debra. Great advice. We ended up booking a flat for $243 for all week, so it’s working out well. I’ll keep the hostel suggestion in mind for next time…sounds lovely. Thanks for taking the time to write.
