I am curious if anyone else has fallen in love with a country while petsitting and decided to move there? After sitting in Greece for two long sits I am in the process of moving there from the US. I absolutely love the people, the beauty, and the cost of living.
@mam1996t Where in Greece are you moving to? My husband is Greek and we are currently on a five week sit in Corfu.
I am moving to the Mani Peninsula outside of Stoupa. My pets will stay with my son in the States until this summer when he graduates. After I bring them over, I will be looking for sitters when I go back to visit a few times a year.
@mam1996t . please do keep us in mind when you are looking for sitters, We have never been to that part of Greece and would love to visit
I will do that.
I know someone 70+ who recently moved to Greece, studied Greek and tok her language proficiency test (and passed) in Oral Greek B level. (It was an online course at the University of Athens as she lived rural, but I’m sure an on site course could be even better). It is amazing to see how she has greek friends and not only the expat bubble, so recommend. Best of luck!
Not another country, but I pet sat across the country and ended up deciding to move back to the other U.S. coast. If I hadn’t done the sit and missed the location, I wouldn’t have made the move.
Separately, decades before pet sitting, I did an informational interview while visiting Hong Kong. There weren’t any openings at the time, but three weeks after I returned home, they added a job and offered it to me. So my husband and I ended up moving overseas suddenly. We didn’t plan to stay long term, and it worked out really well, because taxes were low and I made much more than most locals. We easily saved enough for a down payment on our first home, which we bought on return to the U.S.
For Americans, there’s a sizable tax exemption when working abroad, which can work greatly in your favor if you’re in a low-tax location.
