Depends on your priorities. Are you willing to risk the health and well being of yourself, your family and your property from a stranger who has already demonstrated their poor character for the good of a group of perfect strangers? Many of whom also refrain from leaving honest negative reviews for the same reason?
I know I wouldn’t. The feeling of “getting back at the sitter” by writing a scathing review and the secondary effect of warning others just isn’t worth it.
If you really can’t bring yourself to write an honest review, then don’t leave one at all. Whatever you do, don’t give them 5 stars.
Leaving no review is frowned upon by members who specifically look at review history prior to applying for a sit or accepting a sitter-applicant.
Leaving untrue reviews, and giving appalling sitters 5 stars is frowned on even more. Please don’t bother responding.
Leaving an undeserved positive review isn’t frowned upon by future potential hosts or sitters who would have no way of knowing it was an undeserved positive review. A lack of a review would be viewed as the non-review leaver being apathetic or lazy.
Apathetic or lazy or had so many issues they just want to leave it blank and move on.. I know there were some blanks at pandemic times but recent blanks would be a red flag for me viewing reviews. It’s a sign of a tip of the ice berg!
One recent application the Home owners explained the “gap” because they had a horrendous experience with a single male sitter.. it seemed it nearly put them off male sitters for life.
They liked to micromanage everything and I realized it wouldn’t be a good fit for me either.
Gaps can speak volumes both ways!
Mind the GAP!
I just did a sit recently where I wasn’t left a review, despite the HO saying they were delighted and would love to have me back, asking if I was available in the spring. But if you look at their history, they failed to leave reviews for about half their sitters. I should have passed it by as that’s a red flag to me, but instead I hoped they’d be responsive if I asked them specifically but politely to please leave a review so future HO’s wouldn’t assume it was a bad sit, & I reminded them again before the review window closed…but no dice.
Frustrating, but I’ll heed my gut next time. Hopefully others will see that all my other sits are effusive 5 stars & not assume the worst.
What is wrong with people ! No one is that busy! That is very disappointing to say the least. I would not be back in that case, for sure! They don’t deserve you, even if the pets do!
A review costs so little time and is the sitters’ life blood.
It’s a wonderful feeling when sitter and Home Owner get 5 star reviews and would like to repeat the experience.
MerryPuppins you are obviously a magical nanny to your many charges and that speaks volumes! No review or lukewarm review are not on when we work so hard to make a success of a responsible and, at times , very demanding task when things unexpectedly go pear-shaped.
We are wiser with every pet sit. Every day a school day, as a retired teacher, I know the truth of this!
When they go low we go higher! I feel your pain.
Know your worth!
@Smiley Yes, bad sitters like this definitely do exist. Our second sitter, early in our THS journey, was just as bad. A 20-something single male neglected our house and our pets so thorougly over the 6 weeks that he was in our home.
That was almost four years ago and we used it as a learning experience. So…
@CatMomma It is so important to leave a factual review devoid of emotion. To give future HOs a heads up.
HOs will not know you are missing a review. The lack of reviews is only noticeable in HOs profile, not sitters’
Thanks for telling me that; I didn’t realize. Odd, but in this current situation something of a relief. But I wonder why?
