Hot weather adaptations

Hi there we’re currently on our 3rd sit of this session in Perth and wow it’s been VERY hot so I’d like to open a discussion about

  1. Adapting walking schedules according to weather conditions.
  2. Use of A/C
  3. Other considerations….

We’ve had multiple days of 40° and more, the highest temperature I’ve ever experienced being 43°. We gave the dogs cool showers which they appreciated and walked them at 6am and 9pm instead of the usual times, (all agreed with the HOs by text).

Hi @BonnyinBrighton. I’ve been wondering how you’ve been going over in Perth. Hope you have recovered well after your surgery.

You’re doing all the right things to help keep your pooches cool - early morning and late evening walks, cool showers, damp towels over them when lying down, air con for yourselves and the pooches if they’re indoor dogs. You can also put ice blocks in their water bowls and freeze carrots, fruit etc if they are used to these. Just check with HO first.

It’s 40C here in Victoria too!

@BonnyinBrighton Perth is my home town and we are here between travel and sits. If you want to catch up for a coffee drop me a note.

Good to hear you’re still alive @BonnyinBrighton! Bet you wish you were back home where it’s 8 degrees today! Good advice from @temba

@BonnyinBrighton I’m south of Perth, just over an hour out. If you’d like to do a meet up for an ice coffee, maybe a THS meetup with @prholst? Drop me a line.

Summers in Australia have always been brutal but you are not doing too badly this summer, it’s cooler than usual. Only one day of 43ºC rather than a week of it. Air-con set to 23ºC to 24ºC, draw the blinds and curtains completely closed during the high heat of the day, evening walks close to water or in the forest, swims in the river or the ocean or the local pool. Ice cubes in pets water bowls and plenty of water left in multiple bowls. Wet a sarong, wring it out and wear it as a portable air-conditioning unit. Keep your fluids up. Slip Slop Slap Seek Slide… Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shelter or shade, and slide on sunnies Thats the Aussie way.

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY today. :cowboy_hat_face:

It really seems that with extreme weather being a world-wide phenomenon, it would be great for both sitters and pet parents if THS offered more suggestions and help for this in their blog. It would be a nice thing for all members to have good practical suggestions that pet sitters could put into put into practice and pet parents could include in their guides.

Hi there it’s a shame that we have simply run out of time as we fly to Thailand Feb 1st, but definitely would like to meet up another time. We arrived in Sydney back in mid Dec and caught the India Pacific across to Perth (4 days!) it was a brilliant experience. We’ve been to WA 8 times now and love it down south.

How wonderful to enjoy the Indian Pacific, it’s definitely on my bucket list. I did a train journey last year across the USA and loved it. It’ll be cooler in Thailand this time of year! (in comparison to an Aussie Summer) I’m headed to the UK in April, we THS members clock up some kilometres don’t we? @BonnyinBrighton
