Injured at Pet Sit, Pet Parents Ending Sit

My glasses were fixed for free by an optometrist yesterday.

You provided above the Sit Cancellation terms for Owners. I am the sitter. I am not cancelling the sit. The owners did. I did not agree. I am still here and able to do the sit.

I have been searching for another sit in the county for the dates being canceled and there are no available sits to cover the time frame.

Finally I am waiting for the claims department to respond to my query from yesterday about this situation. They are supposed to respond today. I have a reservation that is locked in at 12 noon PST (nonrefundable at a hotel). I would really like to know where I stand by then. It is 10am PST now. This is stressful.

Depending on your access to transportation, there are sits posted within an hour of Monterey, beginning as soon as this Saturday. I am pretty familiar with the area if you have any questions about specific spots, I’d be happy to chime in.

I’m sorry this happened. It’s a shame. I don’t know who’s paying for your hospital bill but it sounds like the hosts are just terrified about liability. I’m sure the premium will kick in but probably not for all of your costs.

They don’t typically pre-approve anything. You submit all the info about the cancellation along with your hotel receipt and hope for the best.

You might consider Airbnb in addition to hotels. They might have bedrooms in private homes that would offer kitchen access and at less money than hotels.

When we had a 3 week sit curtailed ( due to the owner sustaining an injury a few days into the stay ) we used alternative accommodation just until we were able to secure another sit

This was also in an expensive area . We kept THS informed throughout and made a claim that came in under the threshold and we were repaid .

I’m sorry this happened to you. Honestly, I understand why the HOs cancelled the sit, and I think having one of them there with you during the days you are recovering is wise. Not putting this on their insurance is foolish and I hope they reconsider. This is exactly what insurance is for!

Insurance companies have been leaving California and looking for any reason to cancel policies and justify steep rate increases. I can see why the homeowner would worry about filing a minor injury claim or staying with TH against the advice of the insurance agent.

I very much doubt that insurance would cover them. There have been no medical expenses, the sitter wanted to stay it was the home owners’ decision to curtail the holiday

I can understand they’re afraid of filing a claim against the agent recommendation but it’s not fair to kick the sitter out and not offer to cover the excess costs for alternative accommodation.
I also wonder what they would do if, while the wife is still there, the sitter has to be taken to hospital? They can cancel THS membership but the injury took place in their home when they were still members and had invited the sitter. That can’t be undone now.

@KellyK, apologies. I understand. In my enthusiasm to try to help you then I copied an incorrect weblink. Correct link below

Exactly! They’re shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted!

You’ll almost certainly be alright in the longer term @KellyK but - luckily - their reaction has ensured that everything is documented if you should take a turn for the worse and subsequently need - or want - to involve insurers.

I expect you’ve got a nice, golf ball-shaped lump on your head today? No headache? I do think these HOs are hugely overreacting, but then I live in the UK, where we’d just apply a cold compress, take 2 paracetamol and carry on without giving a thought to potential insurance claims.

I wonder if this agent also advised them never, ever to have any visitors to their home any more?

Sounds like they’ve gotten bad advice and overreacted. Unfortunate that you now unexpectedly need to find shelter and/or a quick replacement sit, which can be hit or miss, especially in a location like Monterey, which is typically costly. Host a Sister is a good suggestion.

Going forward, I suggest that you always have a backup plan to protect yourself. And if one is cost prohibitive, then skip those sits. Cancellations or sits cut short (for whatever reason) are always a possibility for either sitter or host, so make sure you’re covered in case.

The UK also has socialized medicine and the US doesn’t. If she is under 65 she may have insurance ( if she has medical insurance at all) that has large deductibles and co pays. That’s the big reason to file a claim with homeowners insurance. Since she is not from that area and does not have a primary care doctor there, going to the ER at the hospital can cost a couple of thousands and that’s without tests. They would want to scan her for head injury and that costs is another couple of thousand. That’s also why people get PI attorneys when the injury was not their fault and it happened on someone else’s property and the homeowner won’t do a claim with their insurance. That’s one reason homeowners get homeowners insurance.

This is NOT justification for the HO’s refusal to file a claim : I live in Ca. and know that insurance companies are looking ofr any and all reasons to cancel home insurance. This would be sufficient on their (insurance co’s) part to cancel the HO’s policy. It truly sucks on every level as KellyK deserves to be covered, reimbursed and fairly compensated for this avoidable injury.

Your HOs’ attitude is confusing me. If they had any liability, it would already have kicked in. The accident has already happened; what difference does it make to them if you stay, provided you’re not incapacitated and still able to look after their pet(s)?
If they’re liable for your accident, they’re liable. Throwing you out won’t change that.
It sounds like a shock, followed by stress. I hope you manage to find a solution - and recover fully soon.
