It’s pretty common knowledge among cat lovers but I really find fascinating the fact that adult cats only meow to communicate with humans.

One of my favourite activities when I am in a sit with a new cat is learning to interpret his meowing they usually have two or three different ones for different purposes.

Most ginger cats are male. There are roughly
three ginger male cats to one ginger female.

This is because the ginger gene is found on the X chromosome, meaning female cats would require two copies of the gene to become ginger whilst males only need one.

Bernese mountain dogs originated in Bern, Switzerland!

Some people think the word is Burmese (from Burma).

Nope.

“New scientific studies have shown that around one quarter of Labradors—as well as two thirds of flat-coated retrievers—carry a genetic mutation that is associated with obesity in other animals. And in new experiments, researchers found that dogs with this mutation feel hungrier between meals and burn less energy than their counterparts do.”
I don’t need a PhD to be pretty sure my Labrador has this !! Ha ha

Did you know that dogs have circadian rhythms just like people do? So they do know roughly when it should be dinner time.

Cats also have circadian rhythms, although most of the cats I’ve cared for started making their “it’s time! it’s time! I’m starving!” meows well before their actual dinner time…

Shay is an interesting choice of name for a male or female animal. I like its meaning as well as it being easy to say and quick for a child to learn.

Many years ago, I was both a docent and a volunteer at the Houston Zoo. Docent training involved 6 all-day Saturdays, and we had lots of lectures, but fun stuff too. A mother kangaroo can provide a newborn and a joey out of the pouch with milk with different fat content, so each gets the nutrition needed at its stage of life. Animals are amazing!

Wow! That’s really impressive!

It reminds me of the fact that Impala’s pregnancy term is flexible and varies according to the availability of food. If the rain is delayed, they hold the pregnancy for longer so that the newborn has a better chance of survival.

Rabbits can suspend pregnancy, too (don’t know what verb to use). Probably other animals can do that if we now have mentioned two.
Seems most of the fun facts are about animals, which does not surprise me at all.

Our dog Max is better than a clock, we know when it’s 4.30pm. He also used to tell us 10.30pm was bedtime but he soon got out of that habit :joy:
The cats will sit in front of you at 4pm staring at you until they get fed at 5pm :joy:

Random facts about humans

  1. For many people, the distance from their wrist to the inside of their elbow (forearm) is roughly the same length as their foot

  2. ( I know that you are standing on one leg trying this out now )

  3. In many cases, a person’s arm span ( The distance from the tip of one hand’s middle finger to the tip of the other hand’s middle finger, with arms stretched out horizontally ) is approximately equal to their height.
