Hi to everyone, I’m new to the forum and a novice with THS. My name is Jeff (apparently a bit unfortunate these days), a pet parent and I share my home in Aberfoyle, Scotland with Baggins, Pippin and Tallulah, three closely related Newfoundland dogs. Baggins is Pippins Aunt and Mum to Tallulah. Pippin and Tallulah, as well as being cousins, are half-sisters having the same Dad. Baggins is six, Pippin three and Tallulah turned three in October ‘25
Aberfoyle Main Street. Looking West towards Ben Lomond. Not exactly a bustling metropolis, but on the plus side there’s nothing in the local forest or waters that will kill you and eat you.
Me ‘n’ Baggins back in the day.
Baggins waiting patiently for a passerby and a chat.
Tallulah at six months and probably the last time she looked ‘tidy’.
Pippin pretending she’s wild and feral.
They’re all very friendly and no more messy than any other Newfoundland, that is to say very messy.
I am a Dad, Grandad and retired. The dogs live with me on the edge of the which is in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
We’ve had a total of two sits so far. First in July and the second in September, both this year. Essentially the second was a repeat sit. Both sits were just fantastic.
Our own lifestyle is pretty laidback, the village has a few cafes, a couple of pubs and a small supermarket (Coop). Stirling is about 40 minutes away by car, Glasgow just about an hour and Edinurgh an hour and a half. The area around Aberfoyle is known as Strathard and the wider area is known as The Trossachs. It has loads of lochs and forests and is a popular destination for day trippers, walkers and cyclists. Local wildlife include red deer, red squirrels, pine martens and apparently a couple of re-introduced beavers have taken up residence recently.
The girls and I have a great time here with the woods, rivers and lochs and the pubs are dog-friendly. Not all beer and roses though; last year a fox took a route through our garden and dug a scrape to exit the garden. Pippin and Tallulah following the fox scent arrived at the scrape, promptly quadrupled its size and exited our garden into our neighbours and from there trotted off down to the village (about five minutes away). Once there they went in through the automatic doors of the supermarket and grazed the aisles until they were chased out. They then made their way across Main St. into Liz. MacGregors cafe where they cruised the tables before getting put out and were apprehended by the village postmen (who were all familiar with them) and incarcerated the pair in the Post Office while I was called and went to collect them. I had so many other calls I felt obliged to put a post on Aberfoyle for Everyone to say thanks for alerting me and to the postmen for taking them in and locking them up for a bit. Very luckily they didn’t get into trouble crossing Main St. and didn’t encounter anybody who was afraid of dogs. It was a very definite lesson for me though.
As for hobbies etc. I guess just happily meandering pretty aimlessly through life with my family, dogs and enjoying it as much as possible. So far so good; fingers crossed.
All the best to all of you and feel free to get in touch with any tips and advice on making sits a pleasing experience for our sitters.
Jeff.
