Talking of expensive/cheaper locations.
We’ve just done a Waitrose shop in Jersey Channel Islands compared to our home Base in Brighton Sussex UK and it’s a good 20% more expensive due to the majority of groceries needing to be shipped in. Also many shelves are empty as the ships haven’t been able to get into the harbour for a few days…. it’s interesting to compare the cost of living in various locations. This isn’t unfamiliar to us we come here frequently to see an elderly relative but definitely noticed the increased prices this time in doing a ‘big shop’ for the Christmas weeks we’re here.
Yes it’s a very good point. Some Home Owners don’t notice as much as new arrivals! I stayed in a very expensive spot in the Cotswolds and the corner shop was conveniently near but the prices were high. They had a minimum buy without cash payment, encouraging one to use the card. There was one village bus a day to a bigger supermarket, which was a help.
Many tell me where M and S is or Waitrose but I prefer to use more budget choices. On a long sit this can make a significant difference.
I was able to inform the housekeeper of the daily bus service as up to then she had paid for taxis.
The average house was priced at over 1 million, so I felt like a fish out of water!
Bonny - I feel like our life’s intersect across Brighton and Jersey! We mainly sit around Sussex, always with Brighton in mind, and are regular visit Jersey as my family live there. Although we haven’t house sat on jersey, yet!
I can totally relate to the pain of jersey shopping - especially as there are also no cheaper alternatives. It’s really Waitrose or nothing in terms of big supermarkets!
