My home has been destroyed!

Hi, this is my first post. I’m in need of advice. Until now I’ve had very positive experiences with sitters who’ve cared for my home and 2 small dogs in North Essex. However I’ve just returned from 6 weeks away to find the sitter already gone. My dogs seem ok but my house is in a terrible state and I’m not sure what to do about this. So far this is what I’ve come home to:

Door locked but all windows open and sitter gone.

Knee high grass in front and back gardens.

All my beautiful garden flower beds and pots are dried up and dead.

The bins at the side of the house overflowing and rubbish including rotting food and a lot of it strewn all over the pathway at the side.

Back garden covered in dog mess. I can’t go out there without stepping in it.

All carpets downstairs are covered in puddles of dog wee, some dried and stained others still wet. Terrible smell of urine throughout.

The bathroom looks like it hasn’t been cleaned at all, the toilet is filthy, the shower is blocked with hair and slimy stuff.

The sitters bedroom with dirty bedding and stained sheets, filthy carpet stained with dirt.

Kitchen sink clogged with rotten food and burt frying pans piled in.

Inside of fridge filthy and floor sticky

Lounge floor has vomit all over the carpet.

Lounge furniture with sticky stuff and stains.

A horrible smell through the whole house.

I can go on but would make it too long.

I’m hoping someone can advise me on the best course of action and thank you in advance for any help.

Sorry you have experienced this. Report the sitter to THS and review them accordingly. What were the sitters previous reviews like.

Thanks for your reply. Previous sitters were excellent and I have never had any complaints about anyone. All 5 stars

Make sure to take photos and/or videos that are date/time stamped so that you have a record of as much of these points you’ve listed as possible.

Others will give you details of how best to proceed when it comes to reporting it to TrustedHousesitters.

Thank you I will do that now. Should I try to contact the sitter?

I think we need to know the previous reviews of this particular sitter. This is horrible.

I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. This is my worst nightmare to come home to. Glad your animals are fine.

You have 14 days to submit your review. I would wait out the first week at least, until you’ve taken some steps to report this. However, don’t miss the review deadline.

I would not contact the sitter at all. I don’t see how it would benefit you and it’s likely to trigger them to write a negative review.

Some members are good at giving instructions on how to file a complaint. I think @Silversitters is one of them so hopefully they’ll step in and help.

So sorry that you have had this experience. You are probably going to get lots of similar advice.

-photograph the heck out of everything

-make a complaint to THS in the format of a member dispute with all the photos

-review factually and non-emotionally (what you have written here is a good start but it could be more succinct)

Keep in mind that once you’ve written a review, you can’t change it. Hence the reason I said to wait a week or so. If the sitter writes a review, which you won’t see until after you write yours, you will have one opportunity to reply (no set timeframe this time). Again, if it comes to that, wait until you’ve given yourself time to calmly collect your thoughts. In both cases state facts and leave emotions out of it as much as possible.

i’m also tagging @Jenny and @Mark_B , community managers (staff) so they can work with membership services, once you have contacted that department, to make sure your case is taken care of properly and promptly.

Lots of good advice given already. Dont contact this disgusting sitter, what’s done is done, it won’t change anything. Please make sure to write an honest review within 14 days. Hopefully they will get removed from THS. So sorry this has happened to you.

Thank you so much my son is doing it now.

Here’s what I’ve found about filing a member dispute with membership services:

Here’s a link to the website instructions on the Member Disputes Process

Sorry to hear of this experience @druskininkai FIRST Before cleaning up Take photos of all that you have described.

For an immediate response (and to talk to a human ) you can Call Member Services on the 24/7 phone line .

I agree with the advice you have been given by @Snowbird and @MaggieUU

Raise a “Member Dispute “

Supply “evidence “ = the photos you have taken .

Please also leave a factual review of these sitters .

Photos done. I was just cleaning the kitchen so I could use it and found maggots crawling everywhere in the cupboard under the sink dropping out everywhere. Then I realised there were onion and potato peelings rotting in there. I feel violated!

Oh my god, this is unbelievable. I find it incredibly hard to think that a sitter could possibly do all these things and I’m so very sorry for you on behalf of myself and the majority of other sitters who are respectful and would leave your home in the condition they found it or sometimes even better.
I’m desperate to know if the sitter had previous reviews and what they were like. Did you have a video call before the sit? Did you have a handover with them before you left?
You’ve been given great advice already so complete those steps to ensure this sitter is never allowed to sit again

Hi @druskininkai

I’m so very sorry to hear about what you’ve come home to.

I’m going to drop you a private message shortly, to let you know how we can support you.

Jenny

I really can’t add anything to what has already been said. I just wanted to say how sorry I am. :hugs:

I hope you can soon recover your home.

It was a first time sitter. A gap year student 24. No reviews but had a few video calls beforehand and after a fair bit of communication and discussion of what’s expected, I decided to give her a chance as everyone has to start somewhere. I can take some of the blame myself for this but if no one takes on a sitter for the first time how can anyone get started and I’d had such positive experiences previously. I’ve learned my lesson!

Also, the heating was on full blast and all the windows open.
