No sitter applications this time

Just a thought, which is your largest nearby town? Chipping Norton? I’d suggest changing your location to that, simply because it’s more instantly recognisable. You could then include in ‘Home and Location’ that you live in Hook Norton, a tranquil village just 5 miles away from Chipping Norton.

It’s got to be worth a try?

I don’t live in Hook Norton, I put that because it’s nearby. If I say I live in a big town that’s going to attract people who want a town surely? Don’t people search by map?
Carol

@CazFi Your listing currently displays your location as Hook Norton.

As a sitter before I apply , I want to know where the sit it is ( not street name and number but definitely the village name ) . I will work out my travel plans and if it is feasible journey for me to get there before I apply .

Some sitters use the map function, but I have not found it easy to use on the app and the results aren’t very accurate (on the app ) so we always search by typing the name of the location into the search field and then sorting the results by distance .

I need to read on the THS website, more about the filters. Most often, I click on every type of animal EXCEPT cats due to an allergy, and I get results with just dogs all the time.

So how is it that if you click on Cats and Poultry, that you would not see Cat only Sits?

Hmmmm

Yes, you would, that was my point. If someone clicks only cats they should not get sits with other animals too. And that’s how the filters currently work, you only see sits for animals that you clicked on. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that if you click cats you should get all sits that include cats, even those with other animals.

OK, gotcha! To be clear,

When you click on Cats and Poultry, you would see:

Cats only
Poultry only
Cats and Poultry!

Hi @CazFi, it’s great you’ve taken on board advice given by members, with the exception of including outside photos of your house. What you are offering sitters in this equal exchange is free accommodation yet you are not showing them what this is, only snippets of the interior. I started off as an owner member and understand your concerns, but now as a very experienced sitter, I am likely to bypass listings that don’t completely show what I am receiving in this equal exchange. There are very few listings that do not show the exterior of the accommodation. In saying all this, I hope you find lovely sitters.

Well I am not selling my home or renting it out and wish to retain my privacy. If people wanting to stay free in my home for very little effort can’t respect that then it is best they don’t apply.

It’s such a shame you think this way. The effort a sitter has to go to to get to a sit is huge. It’s far from free. Many still have their own household obligations to see to, cost of travel, insurance, and a solid plan B when hosts fail to do the right thing. Then there’s the huge responsibility of taking care of your home and beloved pets. That’s not ‘little effort’, that’s a major responsibility.

You don’t have to put a photo up of your house if you don’t want. That lack of trust on your part means losing out on some of the best sitters around because they have standards.

Well isn’t this interesting.

The guidance is to put nearest city, town or village without narrowing it down so much that the home is identifiable.

Hence me putting this and stating that it is a few minutes drive away.

Someone else is suggesting I put a bigger town in to get more interest.

I’m pretty fed up with this now. Our sitter in June found the advert, enjoyed her stay. Job done. Now nothing.

I hope you find someone suitable. It looks like a lovely cat and chooks.

I suggested you might state the nearest recognisable town, simply so that sitters might more quickly and easily identify where you are, then state in the ‘Home and Location’ section that you are in a village nearby. As you’ve stated, from THS guidance:

As sitters, we would pass on listings not showing the actual property. I’m sorry you didn’t find the advice helpful.

And so the trick to changing the “now nothing” is to heed great advice on here from super experienced members all in one place :raised_hands:t3: They know what they want to see in order to apply for sits. If you add Chipping Norton (which is more likely to be searched & is only a small, quaint town not a metropolis) & then you can say close to CN on the title & that solves that one. Take an angled photo or the back of the house as @Happypets says so sitters can get a feel for where they will live/stay/hang out. It’s important to us. Most sitters have their own homes & they use THS as a way to travel and explore @CazFi so that’s the way to draw them in. It’s an easy sit in a very nice part of the world, however the “sitters who just want free accomm” attitude goes right beside the “owners who just want free pet care” expectation. The whole point is a mutually beneficial exchange and that should always come across in the best sits. #40andcounting #sharethelovetofindasitter

I think your listing looks lovely and it’s exactly the sort of sit I’d be applying for were you to accept families. You have great photos of the bed and kitchen and your pets look lovely. I think you may just be up against a lot of competition for the time of your dates. September is a really busy time for people who aren’t tied to school holidays to travel and I’ve seen hundreds of sits for those weeks that all looked really appealing. Showing some photos that indicate the period and character of your property outside would definitely attract more sitters though as ‘Cotswolds’ conjures up images of picturesque stone cottages and there will be some people who would love to sit in a charming old property while others would prefer to sit in a new build with all mod cons. The age and character of the properties is definitely a consideration for me as I’m looking for upcoming winter sits.

Thank you.

My goodness. What an unpleasant turn this has taken.
I’ve made it clear my house is not old. I’ve also made it clear my cat and chickens pretty much look after themselves so there isn’t a lot to do.

At the end of the day I have to feel comfortable with the arrangements and at the moment I am very uncomfortable with the way I am being treated.

@CazFi
I’m really surprised as your listing looks very appealing.
If we were able to, we would certainly apply.
Fingers crossed you get sorted

Very appealing as @Hallt64 says. I see that you have included some advice from our fellow members (although sometimes they don’t align! ). Good job on the profile! I work - at work! - this time of year, but it is definitely application-worthy.

Hope it works out for you with your dates now, the job well done is nevertheless an investment for future sits. Best of luck.

When hosts can’t draw enough applicants, it often can help to check out the competition. That’s because however much a host has done or what their sit offers, they’re always in competition with other sits at any given time. Perfectly good sits can go with low or no applicants, which is readily apparent to anyone who reviews THS listings. And on the forum, many hosts have complained that they used to be able to attract sitters, but now struggle.

And note: Some sitters focus on pursuing sits in X location(s). But some sitters are much more flexible, so they’re not only comparing sits in X location(s), they might be open to much more of the country or the world. That means sits can compete nationally, as well as globally.

I cant see a link with you sitting. So I cant suggest anything. Only in the worst case there is also a big pet sitting group on Facebook that you could try. Maybe that helps. good luck
