On a sit & my car got broken into

They aren’t responsible but the least they could do is respond to my texts.

Yes. I would still want to immediately leave the location that my property isn’t safe in

Yes agreed. That would be kinder. #keepyourchinup

@Aaliyah23 it really sucks. Do the owners have a plan B, or an emergency contact that can take over the sit if you left?

Also remember to take photos of the break-in should it ever be needed.

Just for a moment:

If you were in the owners’ shoes and you had a sitter that told you their car was broken into and they want to leave, how would you respond? What would you say, and keeping in mind you’re likely on the other side of the world?

What do you want the owners to say? Are you expecting monetary compensation?

I’m not asking you to stay if your safety is at risk but please make sure the animals are not abandoned. Please make sure the pet parents have something in place before you take off.

You will most likely get a bad review for this if you leave, as this is not the HO fault, and being in another country, what can they do? it could happen anywhere to anybody.

No plan B or welcome guide at all.

Hmmm, what would I do in their shoes?? First of all, I would respond! Not go radio silent. The office & the police are asking me questions I cannot answer because I don’t know these people well. Phones still work on the other side of the world do they not?

Compensation? Ofcourse not. Why would I be?? I did ask to use materials they have already on hand to patch up my windows though. Figured that wasn’t asking too much , no response. How about y’all put yourselves in my shoes.

What possible questions would the police ask in this circumstance that you cannot answer? It’s your car. You took the risk of parking there. It’s your responsibility. The owners are not liable. Yes, a little sympathy would make the situation feel better.
You have already stated the car is insured. Take it to a garage and get it fixed and claim back the cost from the insurance. Stop making a drama out of something that could have happened anywhere.
I’m sorry. I’m being cold hearted and practical but I think someone has to be. You are getting yourself worked up about an incident that happens millions of times a day. We all buy insurance for these kinds of incidents. It’s not the owners fault. It’s not your fault. It’s no one’s fault. You were just unlucky. You have reported it to the police. Get the car fixed and move on. If you are frightened that it may happen again find a safer place to park. I cannot see any reason why you would abandon the pets. The damage was done to your car not you.

I hear that you treat your car as your home- it’s your only constant between sits so has more meaning to you because of this reason. It’s not simply a vehicle to get from A to B so it feels much more ‘personal’. It will feel like a home burglary might feel to others except that it’s your car. Try to seperate your emotional attachment out from the impersonal attack on your car. It’s not personal it’s simply random. You’re a victim of a random impersonal attack on your car (not you) that’s left you feeling vulnerable now. You have some great suggestions above….

  1. Pay to park your car somewhere safe.
  2. Complete the sit.
  3. Stop blaming/bothering the HOs.
  4. Learn from this experience ie do an area search re car crime prior to agreeing any future sits. This is a priority for you and may not be such a big deal for others.
  5. Take responsibility for your choices/actions/responses. I’m not being unkind, but I think this might be a very important life experience for you to learn from.
  6. Seek out an online Victim support counselling service to work through your reaction to this event….
Best wishes to you I’m a retired therapist and also did Victim support counselling.

If you’re in a garage and there’s no threat of rain getting in, I’d call a mobile glass repair service about coming to replace broken windows. Safelite is a reputable national chain, for instance.
