If the OP’s post is correct: the HO cancelled on them without agreement, they can’t get the insurance to cover any costs, and the HO is still posting sits - this is problematic. And to learn HO’s can post on boards looking for a sitter - but not the other way around. Huh? Don’t we pay the same amount for joining?
I hope someone with THS support steps up and helps them out. It shows an imbalance with THS between HO & Sitter/Guest that is becoming more and more pronounced.
@Flor3jaar I don’t understand why you can’t message them through the THS platform if you are both still members ?
You can contact member services . If this was a confirmed sit then it should not be cancelled by either party unless there are extraordinary circumstances.
“ As part of the code of conduct that all TrustedHousesitters members agree to, a confirmed sit cannot be cancelled unless both pet parent and sitter agree or there are extraordinary circumstances.”
You can find our cancellation policy in our Terms and Conditions. If you’d like to tell us about a sit cancellation that is not in line with this policy, please contact us via our live chat.”
Hello @Flor3jaar I followed up with this for you and can see that you have already been in touch with Membership Services. I have asked them to reach back out to you to assist you further.
Also, have you checked in your Archived folder in your inbox for the conversation with the owners?
Membership services will be happy to help you with this, please look out for their email.
I hope you get everything sorted soon.
I totally agree with Jenny that it is unsafe to publish your phone number on a forum. As a woman, I had to remove my landline number (when I still had one) from the phone directory because of persistent heavy-breathing phone calls. You just don’t know who is lurking out there.
I agree @lou28 there appears to be an increasing imbalance between HO and sitters rights/abilities. My sit was cancelled less than 2 weeks before the sit, I didn’t have premium membership so wasn’t covered by insurance, I also didn’t agree with cancellation. I wanted to leave review to warn others (my flight was £1200) but there don’t appear to be any repercussions for the HO, they just carry on.
Would be helpful if someone from THS could explain the process that happens from THS end. What happens when HO cancels last minute and sitter has not agreed and there are no extenuating circumstances, they just changed their minds. Thank you
@Scruffmutt I’m hearing you, commiserations! Had a three month sit cancelled recently, two weeks before it was due to start, for no other reason than they changed their minds. Really put me in a tough position, not good at all for any of us that experience this.
THS will not be aware of the circumstances around the cancellation unless you report it to them . If you want THS to investigate and record that the HO cancelled you can raise a dispute .
Thanks @ziggy. I was fortunate I found another sit on a different platform (in your neck of the woods KiwiHousesitters!).
I agree @HelloOutThere but wasn’t keen to register a complaint until I understood the potential implications. We all worry about our future sit opporunities! Also the reason they cancelled was because the previous THS sitter had stayed on and was living with them so they didn’t need me. Therefore a complaint could also impact the other sitter when it’s not actually their fault (how were they to know that I had been booked months before them?). That’s why I’m hoping that a THS moderator will take time to visit this thread and explain the process of how they deal with these situations.
Good for you that you understand the circumstances for the home host, so it seems you will not pursue a complaint; that is your prerogative.
@Jenny may have followed up as much as the moderators can, as they are forum focused not THS member services. @Silversitters is right on regarding the above.
If you think you are all set with your post and member feedback, you can ask a moderator to close this thread.
Hi @Carla in @Flor3jaar situation with the HO cancelling the sit, if they havent both agreed to the cancellation, what actually happens to the HO now? I mean what can THS really do? Band them from the site for a while or do they just get a slap on the rist?
Meanwhile poor @Flor3jaar is in a real jam and potentially this will cost them a lot of money if they can’t get a credit for the airfares. Again why is it that sitters always seem to get the raw deal on everything?
I’m sorry to hear about your situation @Flor3jaar you still have a month to find a sitter for your dog if you want and a possible new sit.
I would suggest to first see if you can contact the HO and explain about the cancellation policy that both parties need to agree on the cancellation otherwise they are in breach of their contract with THS.
Find out more information as to why they are wanting to cancel and explain to them you have already purchased plane tickets for yourseves and your dog and see if you can resolve things without having to cancel the sit.
Maybe if the HO understands all of this and its not a serious matter as to why they want to cancel it may still be able to take place.
Communication is the key here!!.
If after all of this they give a flimsy excuse as to the cancellation and you still dont agree, then contact suport services and take it from there.
Re: airfares contact airline to discuss possibility to get the tickets on hold/credit.
If you still want to go away see if there are other sits that may match your dates or even partial dates. Look on THS and othersites you may be on for sits with and without your dog.
Decide if you want to look for a sitter for your dog, if not and you can aford it, see if there are airbnbs in that area that excepts dogs.
You still have time to do this just break everything down into categories so it doesnt seem to overwhelming and please let us know how you gonwith it all. Good luck
Thank you. Because we take our dog always with us it is not easy to find a sit … applied for several sits (10) but our dog is a problem. Insurance doesn’t help us (only 14 days before sit cancellation is allowed). I think that we will book a stay and just pay for it .
I’m so sorry that happened to you @Dace - as you say we don’t know who is lurking out there and I’d much rather we don’t take the chance!
@Scruffmutt the advice from @HelloOutThere is correct, the Forum isn’t a formal branch of Membership Services, so we’re limited in what we can do, and it might be worth contacting them directly if you’d like to know more about how THS handles this sort of thing.
@Cat_Lover As @Carla is offline on the moment I thought I’d answer just to let you know that it would be up to Membership Services to decide on what action they would like to take, so it’d be best to drop them a line to ask for more information on what would happen in this kind of scenario.
What a shame & how annoying. We recently had to contact membership services after a HO went ‘dark’ on us.
The time for the sit came and went with absolutely zero communication from the HO. Last contact was Nov.'23 for a Jan.'24 sit.
It’s incredibly frustrating as, for the time that they’re incommunicado you can’t look for replacement sits.
Membership services cancelled the sit for me - on the day before the sit was due to start. They also had no luck contacting the HO. We had already travelled to the town and were staying in a hotel.
When I looked at the HO’s profile for the umpteenth time, they had been into the site to review a sitter that went over Christmas, mentioning that they went earlier and stayed longer afterward due to a family emergency. I have no idea why they managed to navigate round to review one sitter and studiously ignore all my messages (on THS, WhatsApp, standard text, standard call, WhatsApp call - I felt like a stalker!!) and forget they had arranged our sit.
We are full time travellers and were heading that way anyway but I thought we had a buffer of time before looking for places to stay. But hey, we managed.
I gave this HO the benefit of the doubt but, it appears, HO cancelling is obviously more common than I was led to believe by membership services.
Good luck with finding a replacement sit, we didn’t but sits where we are are few and far between.
@Niknav this sounds like a very poor experience. What help did member services provide ? Did they advise you about the formal process for raising a complaint about the behaviour of this HO ?
Since the sit was cancelled - you can’t leave a review to alert other sitters however there is a process for flagging this to THS
Do you have insurance by TrustedHousesitters ? We have and previous time (cancellation bij HO) it took us more than 3 months mailing and sending proves but we got the money from TrustedHousesitters insurance l.
Yes they did inform me of the code of conduct and that I could formally complain but, as I said, I gave the HO the benefit of the doubt given their circumstances.
I did wonder why it should be me that invokes THS’s T’s & C’s and not THS themselves.
