No one wants to pay more money…I get that! I don’t either.
BUT…if you really want that overlapping (well intentioned…not the fraudsters) sit…present another option that can work and that can solve this problem!
But if the only thing stopping you from another great sit, especially to overlap two long ones…$130 is a small price to gamble with.
Completely agree; as a back-to-back sitters it’s driving my partner and I crazy that we can’t apply for sits anymore that start on the same day that another one ends. The new rule is really limiting and frustrating. It’s hard enough trying to find sits that line up in the calendar, yet alone now being restricted from a sit that could work out perfectly for your dates & location. Is it possible @Carla & @jenny for you talk to the team about scrapping this, at least for sit dates that start and end on the same day? It is definitely possible to end one sit and start another on the same day, and works out really well.
You can apply for a sit that starts on the same day another one ends .
“ We know that many sitters confirm back-to-back sits, and so to ensure these members are not negatively impacted, sitters will still be able to apply/confirm sits that end and start on the same day.”
Oh what! So many times, I tried applying to sits that start on the same day that an already booked one ends, and it didn’t let me. I tested it now, and it it’s available for me to apply, so it must have either been a glitch or they changed it something. Thanks so much for letting us know, you’re a life saver!
It sounds like some writing, reading or writing/reading too quickly are getting confused here. You CAN apply for sits that start/end the same day. You CAN NOT apply for sits that overlap. Please don’t confuse that.
Unrelated and quick…TURO also has the same policy…I am on a 4 week vacation (not THS related) right now and I rented an SUV…I want to rent a convertible for the weekend and I can’t because I already have the SUV! WHO KNEW??? This isn’t just THS…
Back to point, It sounds like the majority of members want to OVERLAP sits which WAS possible within the last year.
@Carla@Jenny - Why can’t THS institute a policy for people that have 10+ 5 star reviews or something of the sort to overlap sits? It is very obvious some members are successful at this. The LARGE majority shouldn’t suffer. Can you educate us on HOW MANY ISSUES THS had the full year previous to this policy of how many issues arose?
While I stand by my easy solution of simply paying for two memberships is such a simple way around this…and if others would rather dispute that simple fact, go ahead. My grandma always said, “You can’t fight City Hall.” But City Hall (THS) seem to be penalizing a number of GOOD members, that haven’t based this in the past are being isolated and that simply isn’t fair, especially if you had…5 instances in a year?
@Carla@Jenny
Data can help back this up…please share actual statistics of;
How many active paid members are on this site, both sitters and home owners.
The previous 12 months before THS instituted the policy where we can’t OVERLAP sits, HOW MANY INSTANCES RESULTED IN SOME SORT OF HARM TO AN ANIMAL OR HUMAN?
Why can’t THS at least institute a policy where if a member has 10+ (or whatever number) 5 star ratings, they unlock the privilege to OVERLAP?
If THS institutes policies that harm good paying, loyal, long-term and kind hearted people, THS needs to convince us that it is doing the right thing for the majority of its members. Not every member will be happy 100% of the time…that is unrealistic.
The forum team has previously passed on all of this feedback, but outside of that, we have no power to influence internal policies or changes. What we can do is provide you with a space to talk about it and as mentioned pass feedback to the wider company. If we ever hear of any changes or updates we will make sure we let you all know.
You might not have seen it but if you check out the original post on this thread about overlapping sits it will explain it in a bit more detail Overlapping Sits Discussion Post
Can you at least share with us the statistical data that we asked for (well, me) as well as respond to the third bullet;
How many active paid members are on this site, both sitters and home owners.

An answer is needed this weekend…but the paying members that are the reason for THS being in business, we should know these basic facts. Perhaps many more of us would agree with THS if we knew what was going on. We don’t need anything confidential or revealing…just the facts!
The forum team does not have access to that information and whilst we try and be as transparent as possible the wider business has to decide if they can share this type of data (I’m not a business expert but I am sure there may be reasons why business can’t share certain data, but again that is above my remit!).
The forum is set up to facilitate peer-to-peer support, member’s advice and discussions on all things pet & housesitting, so to manage expectations these questions are outside of our remit.
You can reach out to the Membership Services team and see if they can assist you further. Feel free to post back here if you get any more information. Thank you!
The only arguments that would matter to management are commercial arguments. And there is one: this policy may drive some couples to take their second membership on a competing site.
As established subscribers of Trusted House Sitters we would like to bring a significant issue to your attention. A year ago THS enacted a policy whereby members were prevented from communicating with homeowners posting assignments having dates that overlap members’ existing bookings.
Although we realize there have been instances of members abusing the process resulting in canceled bookings, missed assignments and/or poor quality care we would like to know exactly how many instances of abuse actually occurred, prompting the policy change. For the overwhelming majority of members the new policy represents a hardship which negatively impacts our ability to schedule our travels and living arrangements.
When we are unable to schedule a day or two of overlap that can lead to holes in our schedules resulting in hotel stays, restaurant meals, etc, for which we haven’t budgeted. Remember that many of your membership use your service as a way to reduce travel and living expenses. An inability to overlap assignments adversely affects that goal.
Responsible house sitters can manage overlapping dates. A two or three day overlap presents no significant challenge if the assignments are close to each other. There is no impact on either home care or pet care.
It is suggested there be some kind of threshold members can achieve which will demonstrate a history of responsible, high-quality care. Those members would then be deemed capable of managing the complexities of overlapping assignments. The threshold might be a quantity of 5-star reviews although a different parameter could be established.
Please seriously consider changes to this policy. Your service is valuable to us, the membership, but this restrictive policy reduces the overall effectiveness of THS for both homeowners and house sitters. As we are paying for a premium service we feel we should not be subject to, what we consider to be, unreasonable limits on the application’s utility.
I also don’t think they can allow overlapping sits. Maybe if couples are available to manage it, but what about me? I am by myself. I don’t think a HO would want me to overlap sits. It wouldn’t be fair to the animals. And crazy busy for me to clean up one place and go to another while taking care of pets over a few days. So the suggestion stands, if you want to overlap, you need 2 memberships. Otherwise overlapping sits could put pets in risky situations.
I am a HO and can accommodate overlapping sitters.
I have one cat and it would be fine for a sitter to come a day later or leave a day earlier than the posted sit dates. Even for my most recent sit, I was able to be flexible with the sitter who needed to come later than originally confirmed and left earlier. I could accommodate her by having friends check the cats (foster kitten in addition to my resident cat) before and after the sitter. It wasn’t ideal, but better than having no sitter for any of the time.
@Huronbase overlapping sits were often very manageable for couple sitters and could be extremely helpful for sitters to manage gaps and for hosts who might otherwise not find suitable sitters. My husband and I split up occasionally to manage overlaps and it all worked perfectly. Many other couples did the same. No pets got neglected this way and we did not require two memberships for this purpose. For single sitters its a different story- you cannot be in two places at once- that’s clear. The no overlap rule has caused much more harm than good as all the negative feedback about it shows. @mikeh I like your letter- its the truth-unfortunately THS is highly resistant to reversing policy… Big pity. They would win back a lot of respect if they listened to member feedback…
It can work for couples, or cats but overlapping sits wouldn’t work for singles and dogs. And if you didn’t have a car to get back to an overlapping sit, then a pet could suffer. It works sometimes, sometimes not. So a rule for sometimes it could work or a rule for when it doesn’t. The rules should reflect safety for all. Not could work for some. That is the logic. Not the entitlement.
Before you send this…I know several other members in this forum and on another one may want to weigh in…but if they don’t…they don’t.
It is great the way it is.
When do you intend to send this? If you can wait a week, I can share this forum with the other one or two where this came up recently. Give me a day or so though…I am traveling and am not near a computer as frequently…and I don’t log in from my phone for THS…at least on the forums.
