Please critique my ad

Hi everyone

I’m hoping to get some feedback on my listing. I’m looking for an experienced sitter to care for my two cats while I’m overseas, and I want to make sure my ad communicates the right expectations without sounding unreasonable.

One of my cats will be 20 years old at the time of the sit. She’s currently in good health and stable on her medication, but because of her age, it’s really important to us that our sitter has solid experience with senior cats, is confident giving medication, and has several positive reviews.

My husband and I are quite flexible with most things, but the wellbeing of our cats is a non-negotiable. I’d love to know if my ad is clear, fair, and realistic, or if there’s anything I should adjust to attract the right applicants.

Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks so much BJane, I couldn’t find the instructions earlier. I’ve now added a link, so hopefully that works.

Hi Stef! I think your post looks wonderful - lovely photos, well-taken with a nice mix of the house/rooms and the adorable moggies. In the text you have a friendly tone, and are very clear about the needs of the older cat.

I honestly don’t have any suggestions for improvements, it looks splendid, and if I wasn’t thousands of miles away, would apply in a heartbeat.

Good luck finding a great sitter!

Your sit and location looks dazzling and you have done a nice job detailing what you need from a sitter and what they can expect. So well done on that front.

We usually publish sit dates ranging from 2 to 6 weeks and we do it 6 months out. We have had great luck connecting with sitters scheduling that far ahead and those sitters are usually full-time, highly regarded nomads filling their schedules up to a year in advance. Unless such a sitter has their calendar filled out already and your short 5-day sit connects some longer sits, publishing your dates 8+ months out might prove counterproductive.

A title is the first chance to pique a sitter’s interest. “Looking for cat lovers!” Is not very piquing and is too short. You have 80 characters to use and a lot to convey: 1 older but both easy cats, nearby amenities, gorgeous home, VERY good local public transport, … I would definitely rework that title.

Your profile picture is of a room. It is a very nice room and maybe enough so to pique interest. But your priority is cat loving sitters so I would use the photo of Mia perched on the scratch post first. I’d also add photos of the house from the outside to give some sense of the neighborhood. Photos of the upstairs rooms accessible to a sitter are appropriate. You might have to sacrifice some of your too many photos of Mia and Leo even though all of them are quite nice.

Your location description is a bit thin. Adding a few details about distances to the CBD with bus times, distance to MEL and bus connections and distances to beaches or nearby attractions you would recommend would all be useful and interesting.

“We will prioritise sitters with several reviews and solid cat-care experience.”

Unnecessary to state as both obvious and redundant. You open your profile saying the same thing.

“Ideally, we’d like to meet in person before confirming the sit but understand it might not be possible.”

Unless you are going to strictly use local sitters, this wish is not practical and may be limiting or off putting for some sitters. It tends to suggest that your selection process is time consuming and most of the vocal, experienced sitters on this forum typically express an unwillingness to be unduly strung along by “indecisive” hosts.

“*As of Dec 2025, we haven’t booked our flights yet.”

You will read here that some sitters will not accept a sit if the host has not booked their flights but I would remove this statement for now as marginally useful and something to discuss with sitters who apply near term. If you’re inside 3 months without flights booked, putting this statement back in will be very useful to potential applicants.

“*Please note: the garage and master bedroom will be locked, as well as two spare rooms.”

As a host myself, I think what you list in your profile in terms of rooms and photos of those rooms should be fully available to sitters. Your profile indicates that parking is outside and you have no pictures of your master bedroom or spare rooms. Therefore none of the locked rooms need to be mentioned in the profile. Stating that they will be locked may be read as inhospitable.

One note on the garage is that electric circuit breakers and some mains are located in garages in my neck of the woods. Blocking access to those would be problematic but, for a 5-day sit, you will probably be okay.

In that same vein, “Our 5-bedroom* + study home” is technically accurate but you’re closing off much of it. I’d change that to “Our large home” and let your profile pictures do the talking (something they do quite well).

The catio looks lovely. If it is securely screened in so that your cats can use it unsupervised, you maybe want to make that clearer.

Otherwise, your profile looks perfect :grimacing:

There is some great feedback in this thread for you. @OnTheRoadAgain provided great tips. I’m a very experienced cat sitter currently planning a long trip to Australia in 2026 and the main thing that would prevent me from applying is your desire to meet in person. That tells me you are really looking for someone local and probably wouldn’t consider someone coming from another continent.

Obviously, lots of great things, but I’ll focus on what might be off-putting. Very specific requirements, lots of locked rooms, more focus on what you need rather than how a sitter will benefit from it. I wouldn’t apply.

Welcome to the forum @Stef_365. I can see you have been very pleased with your previous sitters and that they enjoyed sitting for you and your precious cats. I live in Victoria and am a very experienced cat sitter and past owner of numerous cats, with my last two living until they were 18 and required medication. I’ll actually be in Point Cook in March cat sitting!

It is very obvious from all that you have written in your listing that your cats mean the world to you and I completely understand that. I do, however, feel that you are thinking solely of your own needs without thinking of what your sit offers to sitters. Yes, you have a beautiful home (with some areas off limits) and two gorgeous cats but what else? You mention you don’t want sitters to be out all that often for the whole day but this sit is for over a month and there is an expectation that sitters will have 4 hours free time daily in this equal exchange. You make no mention of attractions in the area that sitters could enjoy. Point Cook is nearly an hour from Melbourne CBD so being able to explore our great capital city could be limiting.

Advertising early can be a great idea. I’m thinking perhaps though your listing has been “lost” in amongst the multitude of Christmas sits being advertised. It may be better to re-list it after January.

Obviously, Mia being an elderly cat could be of concern to sitters. Anything could happen between now and the end of August to her which would change what was agreed at confirmation. Where you include so much detail, I am surprised you do not mention what arrangements you have in place with your vet should Mia’s health seriously deteriorate whilst you are overseas. This would be reassuring to applicants.

Although you would ideally like to meet before confirming a sitter, the reality is that this doesn’t happen often unless the applicant is local or sitting nearby. Remember, we are sitting for free so travelling to Point Cook involves expense with no guarantee of the sit being confirmed. A video chat is what is acceptable by many.

Hoping this has been helpful where you asked for a critique.

That is a wonderfully thorough ad, Stef !

As a sitter who has particular love for seniors (espcially cats) I particularly appreciate your description of Mia’s ( & Leo’s) status and needs. The importance of their wellbeing permeates your requests which are fair, clear and realistic. The fact that you’re looking ahead and letting your potential sitter know how things are now indicates that things may change by the time of your sit…….the sadness of ageing being what it is.

I hope that the detailed care instructions (and the rest of your ad) and clear love that you have for your cats bring you a wonderful sitter ! I only wish I could help !

OnTheRoadAgain, thank you so much for taking the time to send me this amazing feedback, truly appreciated.
You’ve raised some great and your perspective as an experienced host is incredibly helpful.

I really value the time you took and all the detail you shared. I’m going to revise the listing with your notes in mind.
Thanks again, this kind of feedback is exactly why I asked for a critique!

Thank you so much for the honest feedback, I really do appreciate you calling out how it might come across from a sitter’s point of view.

I can see what you mean about the balance between requirements and benefits, and I’ll revisit the tone so it feels more welcoming and less “rule heavy.” That’s definitely not the impression I want to give.

Re the locked rooms, that’s helpful to hear too. I only plan to lock our main bedroom, my husband’s study, one spare room, and the garage (mostly for storage and personal items), but I can see how listing them all might make the house seem less open than it actually is. I’ll rethink how I communicate that in the ad.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your perspective. It’s exactly the kind of insight I was hoping for when I asked for feedback.

Thank you so much, Temba! I really appreciate the thoughtful feedback.

You’ve raised some great points about balancing my needs with what the sit offers, and I’ll definitely make the listing feel more welcoming and more like an equal exchange.

I cover local attractions, transport, and things to do as well as Mia’s vet-care arrangements in my Welcome Guide, but you’re absolutely right that adding a brief version of that directly to the ad will be much more reassuring and helpful for sitters, so I’ll include those details.

I’ll also soften the wording around time away from home and adjust the “meet in person” note so it doesn’t discourage non-local applicants.

Thanks again for taking the time. Your feedback has been really useful and very appreciated.

Thank you so much toreishi! That’s such a kind and thoughtful message, and it really means a lot to me. I’m glad the care details for Mia and Leo came across clearly and with the intention behind them.

Things can certainly change with seniors, and I wanted to be upfront so sitters feel prepared rather than surprised.

Thanks again for the lovely encouragement. I wish you could help too! Fingers crossed the right sitter finds us.

Your listing looks great. On reading previous posts in this thread, I realise you have already amended it somewhat, as I can see no mention of locked doors and the only hint relating to your expecting sitters to stay home for significant periods is is your comment that ‘cats don’t need constant supervision and are fine on their own for a few hours, just not full days on a regular basis.’

When HOs post on here asking for advice on improving listings, it always concerns me that amendments may represent a disparity between reality and sitter expectations. For example, if pics depict a messy home - which yours clearly don’t - but advice is to tidy away the clutter, one has to wonder whether the new images properly represent the reality of the home, or if it’s just a veneer. Likewise, if you’ve previously mentioned that you’re looking for a sitter who will stay home with Mia and Leo, but have subsequently amended to minimise your portrayal of that ideal, then you may not find a good fit with sitters who subsequently apply.

In short, if you ideally want sitters who will stay home with the kitts for most of the time, then I’d advise you still to say so. Sure, it may put some sitters off, but they’ll surely be the ones you don’t actually want to care for your home and pets.

It looks like a great sit. If you weren’t on the other side of the world, we’d be applying right now!

Wishing you the best of luck for a perfect match.

Hi Happypets, thank you so much for taking the time to review my ad and share this thoughtful feedback, I really appreciate it.

I can confirm that I have only updated the listing in ways that genuinely reflect what I am comfortable with. The things that matter most to us, like wanting a sitter who does not spend full days out on a regular basis, are still very much there. I have selected the THS option that states sitters can be away for up to 4 hours because that is truly what we expect and what works best for Mia and Leo. That has not changed.

I am aware that this might turn away sitters who are hoping to do a lot of sightseeing, however Mia will be close to 20 by the time of the sit, and it is really important to us that she is in good hands and not left alone for long stretches.

I asked for feedback because I wanted different perspectives and to understand whether there was anything I could clarify or present more helpfully, not to soften our actual expectations. I am naturally quite flexible, but I am also very aware that we have preferences and needs, and we want to be upfront so the match is right for everyone.

Thank you again for the reassurance and the kind words about the sit, it means a lot.

Just to make you aware, sitters cannot see this detail selected by HOs. It would make life a lot easier if we could!

oh really? What is the point then? :worried: Thanks for letting me know, I had no idea!

It sounds like a very nice sit. Did you take out the bit others mentioned about meeting in person?, or maybe I missed it in the long writeup. Given your wish for experienced sitters with good reviews, you’d probably also benefit from doing a video call with applicants – maybe mention that you’d like to do that. This would allow you to ask specific questions about your concerns re Mia’s age, and get a sense of how the sitters would respond.
Most of your photos are of the cats; I think I counted 21? I’d guess many sitters probably only need to see a few; maybe 3 or 4 each? I’d recommend a few more photos of the house, particularly the yard. If it’s as nice as the house looks, the outdoor space will make your listing even more appealing.
Good luck; hope you get a great sitter. …Alas, I’m in Canada

My initial thought- these are nice people, the tone is great. The only issue is the ‘few hours’ that the cats can be left. I believe sitters will be hard to find who will stick to these requirements….so it’ll be a small pool of people. Best wishes.
