My wife and I are considering becoming subscribers to THS. We live in Burlington, NC which is about 30 minutes from Durham (home of Duke University), Chapel Hill (home of the University of North Carolina and about an hour from Raleigh (capital of NC). We have a two-year old, 3900 sq ft home on almost an acre with two 5-year old, very spoiled pomeranians who are brothers. Just wondering if this area is considered a good location for housesitters.
Almost every area could be a good area for some subset of sitters, depending what their wants and needs are. You might mention what there is to do and see in your area, and whether a car is needed or if you have public transportation. Is there anything walkable - market, shops, etc. You could search other sits in your area and see if they are getting filled or if many have low applications. Can your pups can be left alone long enough for a sitter to spend time out enjoying the area? If they had a child at Duke, for example, could they spend half the day visiting them? Most people here wonât know enough about your specific area of the world to know whether itâs popular without a bit more detail.
Hello and yes. Personally I love exploring, visiting museums, antiquing and I always try to find independent book shops and coffee shops. I love NC and am open to most surroundings (walkable city, mountain, country, etc).
Absolutely! Anywhere driving distance to universities is a great location. Any location can attract sitters - there are thousands of sitters, all with their own particular tastes. I typically sit in cities but Iâm doing a sit now âin the middle of nowhereâ, just because I want a break.
Family members wanting to visit students will find such a location attractive. Mature students wanting a respite from their roommates will apply. Visiting scholars from other universities would prefer a house to a hotel room. And so on. Give it a try. If you do decide to list, you can put a link to your listing here to get feedback on how to make it more attractive. Also consider reviewing other sits in North Carolina and see what characteristics seem to be attracting five star sitters.
While many are mainly interested in sitting as a means to travel more cheaply to highly popular or more exotic tourist destinations, there are all types of sitters who are interested in a variety of destinations for all types of reasons.
For example, I would be interested in your sit as I have family that live in the Raleigh area. There are lots of nice areas in that region and plenty to see and do. We did a sit on the outskirts of Durham on a lake and it was beautiful.
My husband and I sit full time and when we are in the US especially, the touristic appeal of a place isnât often a top priority. We are much more focused on being somewhere comfortable. We do enjoy more spacious places generally so a house like yours would be appealing.
We have done many sits in suburban areas and other spots that wouldnât be considered âhigh demandâ by most.

I am a sitter who spends my home time in a Chapel Hill condo and I do take on local sits to get into open space. Iâve recently sat in Saxapahaw with cats and parrots, Zebulon with a pair of delightful GSDs, suburban CH with 3 cats, Burlington with a bulldog and a boxer, and and 2 x Raleigh. And many more NC sits within 2 hours drive of Chapel Hill. Yes, NC is a good spot for sitting.
Chapel Hill sitter here. Even though winters here feel cold to me, for those from further north we are balmy! Plenty of retirees from up north have relocated to the area. Lots of outlet malls in Burlington, which may be a draw for some!
