A common kind of comment from HOs. But actually, pet sitting is a hobby that costs us money. I can stay at home, like I do now. I am saving so much right now!
Just an FYI and safety note: an extension cord should not be used to charge an electric vehicle. Extension cords are not designed to handle the high amount of power and sustained current that EV charging requires over long periods of time. This can lead to potential safety hazards, such as overheating, electrical fires, and electric shock.
We have an EV and it gets plugged directly in to a standard electrical socket (like you are charging your phone).
@PetSitterBug
Mains electric in the UK is 13A rated, as long as a 13A extension cable is used and unwound fully, there really should be no difference to plugging into a wall socket.
Happy to be corrected by an electrician if necessary.
I was wondering about that.
I think itās one of those things where if a guest offers, a lot of people will say, āOh nonsense! Itās the least we can do!ā But when they donāt offer and suddenly thereās a bill, it feels completely different.
I have a Tesla and I just charged off-site. I had to drive about 20 minutes to restaurants and grocery so I did it then.
I would rather do that than try to have the HO figure out how much electricity I used.
Itās all about communication - and the courage and integrity to do it. As sitters and pet parents gain experience we can have a list with all the things to address - like charging cars, or in my case, if the owners use artificial fragrances and scented cat litter. I believe in many situations sitters should be paid so IF they had asked you if they could, it would still be cheaper for you to say yes than to pay a sitter not on TH ($60 - 150 a day)
No, itās an equal exchange.
Absolutely 100% agree with that.
I couldnāt agree more and it is up to the two parties participating in the exchange to decide if it feels equal and/or acceptable for them. The pricing and maths (if any) should be done by both parties, not outsiders. It is also understood that, once an agreement is reached, both parties should stick to it or mutually agree on renegotiation if something unexpected should happen.
I also own an EV and costs me about the same.
To go back to the OP: I bet that the bill being so high was not only due to this reason, they must have used more electricity in general. Not sure where you are located, but Iām assuming that 6 X higher is more than Ā£ (or $) 1.5-2 per day.
Good for them that they are fine with paying for the extra usage.
