These dogs will destroy your stuff

I have a bad review now for my only pet sit and I can explain truthfully what happened and how it was not my fault and how sitters do have the right to make their own call.

I have seen other posts alluding to owners treating sitters like full-time servants and that’s pretty much how I was treated (like I have no say in what I do whatsoever and I must follow every instruction no matter how absurd).

I did a sit in WNC where there is a huge demand and not many sitters. I also do mutual aid in that area since Helene and the floods have really devasted the area. I was amazed that the town I went to sit at was untouched. It was kind of a miracle.

But since there’s no mention of "if you don’t lock up your coat, blanket, soft items, or any clothes they will be destroyed by the dogs, I trusted that I could at least hang my coat on the back of a dining room chair.

Nope. Dogs got my credit card out of my pocket and almost made it completely unusable. The tap is now broken and I was almost stranded there. They punctured my coat, destroyed my lunch bag (completely shredded it), and tore many tufts of goat hair out of my sheepskin. They also tore up the owner’s books (which I was expected to clean up, but where is that in the rules?).

So, for her complaints about me - wow. Where do I even begin? She expected me to administer a once per month medication which she didn’t even leave out for me.

I was supposed to find it, I guess. Just look in every nook and cranny of the house for the meds, right? Go through all her drawers to complete the task, or no?

Again, you read that right. A once per month medication which if I didn’t give it to them should not have been held against me. There was absolutely no consequence to her dog’s health whatsoever. None. No problems stemming from my actions. Not a thing.

I cleaned this owner’s house of my own destroyed stuff, ran her floor robot everyday, mopped, washed my towel and folded it, and she COMPLAINED TO ME IN TEXT MESSAGES ABOUT HAVING TO TIDY UP A LITTLE BIT saying SHE DID NOT THINK I WAS A GOOD PERSON TO DO HOUSE OR DOG SITTING AT ALL.

I AM LIVID.

She made herself in communicado the WHOLE time she chose to be gone. She refused to check her phone. READ THAT AGAIN - SHE EXPECTED ME TO CALL HER AT A RETREAT INSTEAD OF PERIODICALLY CHECKING HER PHONE.

NOT MY JOB. NOT MY RESPONSIBILITY. SHE REPLIED BACK TO HER EMERGENCY CONTACT BUT NOT TO ME.

She also will warn you last minute and admits in person that the dogs destroy everything. She does. She does not say that in her profile, however. She also lies about how aggressive one of the dogs is at meal time and she is in complete denial about this dog, but will BLAME THE SITTER FOR NOT CONTROLLING THE DOG SHE CAN’T EVEN CONTROL HERSELF. I’M NOT KIDDING.

HER DOG IS ALL OVER THE FURNITURE ALL THE TIME. SHE PRETENDS IT’S YOUR FAULT. IT’S COMPLETE AND TOTAL ABUSE. AND THIS APP EXPECTS SITTERS TO JUST TAKE IT POLITELY WHILE WE GET LIED ABOUT AND POORLY REVIEWED AND ARE THE ONES SUFFERING DAMAGE BY THE OWNERS LYING ABOUT EVERYTHING.

Sorry to hear all this @savant As well as gaining some camaraderie on the forum, you also need to talk to THS support for some help here. Did you take photos of the destroyed items? Did you screenshot the WG where it does NOT mention the dogs chew everything? Gather some evidence and file a dispute as it sounds pretty hideous as a sit. Looking back were there red flags you should have picked up? Did you write an honest review about her lack of comms and the badly behaved dogs?Have you lined up any other sits? #hopeitimprovesandsoon

It sounds to me like you didn’t have a proper video call nor handover. If there was medication to be given then surely you would have asked the owner where it was, how to administer it etc during handover. If you did have a video call did you see the dogs during it? If they were so out of control wouldn’t that have been obvious during the call? There is a lot of preparatory research that can be done to help make a decision about accepting a sit. Had there been sitters before? Did you read their reviews about the owner and did she review them?
Btw, where is WNC? We’re not all from the US if, indeed, it is in the US

Hi @savant. That sounds like a very tough sit. You do have the opportunity to reply to the Homeowner review ONCE and there is no time limit for you to do that. It is very important to be factual and unemotional in that response. I have seen some where the sitter’s response was too shrill and did nothing to benefit them.
Emphasize that this was your first sit and you learned a lot and this will lead to your increased success on future sits.
State that you would have been happy to administer the medication but you were not told where it was located and the Homeowner did not reply to your numerous attempts to contact her
Encourage future sitters to protect their belongings as the dog are destructive if given even minimal opportunity.
I would also mention the food aggression.
If I read these things in a sitter’s response, I think I would get a reasonably clear picture of what was what and as a result wouldn’t go near it.

I doubt food aggression would show in a video call. Most dogs are not fed during a call. Maybe we should ask for it. :blush:

First of all, I was the one who got complained about and it was dealt like she was not in the wrong whatsoever. I had to explain to (edited to remove name) that I should not be expected to give dogs medication that doesn’t exist. There was a bag of pills with the food supplements and they were unmarked so I did not pretend they were medication.

The real meds which be honest - she could have given them before she left were stored somewhere.

She has a different set of instructions once you get to the house - I told (edited to remove name) to ask for that and to ask for a video of her feeding the dogs side by side.

Will they? Probably not. Because she filed the complaint.

Without showing me any proof that the meds existed (edited to remove name) informed me that I was to still to do all the tasks - this is ILLEGAL - you cannot tell people they have to do free work especially if it is impossible to do or vague and should probably be done by the pet owner.

But the point is that she was just too lazy to give her dogs their medication once per month and now it’s my fault? Abuse.

What I should have done and will do every time from now on is take pictures of every single thing a dog does to make a mess and I will start texting that some tasks are not free. Especially cleaning up my own destroyed belongings only to be treated like a servant by the app and the pet owner.

Not acceptable. Is that what (edited to remove name) suggested I do, no. He said don’t question instructions just do them you don’t have a choice those are the rules effectively.

Illegal. Again. I’m probably calling a lawyer because this person should be kicked off the app. And she claimed due to trivial things after my absolute nightmare with her pets that I was the one not suitable for pet or house sitting and the app trusts that review enough to keep it up.

Also to illustrate how vile this woman is she complained about the dog which is on the furniture all the time anyway because I sent her a cute pic. She even has a pun because her couch is covered in dog hair all the time that it’s “fur-niture” (edited by Forum team to remove personal remark about Owner)

I use a sponsor’s credit card when I do trips and he ordered a new one. But his name is on the card.

She just crawled right up there and laid on top of me I was to tired to fight she won and I got some great shots.

The app should ask for it - stop doing all the work for free - I will not clean up any destroyed stuff or disarrayed messes an animal makes for free ever again. I have my own rules I’m going to send to pet owners which they have to agree to. Otherwise the app thinks we are servants.
