THS Book Club: Ongoing discussion for future books

Hello All,

I enjoyed our discussion about The Lion Women of Tehran and am looking forward to our next book. I have just started reading My Friends which Maeve suggested in January. So far it is a very good read so I would like to suggest it as our next book.

Belinda

Hi Belina,

Thank you for your suggestion, I’ll check it out

If anyone else has any suggestions for our next THS Book Club, feel free to share them with the group. Every suggestion is appreciated!

Thanks,
Jess

Hi again everyone,

Thank you to those who recently joined our discussion about The Lion Women of Tehran, it was a lively and interesting chat.

For our next meeting, we need to pick a book. I reviewed all of the books suggested on this thread, and decided that we should read either:

  1. My Friends by Fredrick Backman: Rated 4.6 by 48,800 people! It’s a story about the friendship of 14 year olds and the transformative power of art. A group of teenagers find refuge from their difficult home lives by spending their days laughing and telling stories out on a pier. Recently re-suggested by @Landbiscuit

  2. The Sunflower Boys by Sam Watchman: Suggested by @MaggieUU a while back, and included in the choice here because on our last discussion it was noted that people wanted a topical choice. In Sam Watchman’s debut novel, brothers Artem and Yuri embark on a journey after war kills their family in rural Ukraine. As the journey unfolds, so does a beautifully constructed character study of Artem’s identity, loss of innocence, and blossoming love for his best friend.

Both books follow young people and their developing personalities and relationships as they struggle with identity and purpose.

Please let me know which you prefer by 6th June, and I will go with the majority.

@Landbiscuit has voted for My Friends (unless you’d like to change this, Belinda!).

And I will vote for The Sunflower Boys.

Many thanks
Jess

I’d definitely like to read both of these books!

I’ll vote for The Sunflower Boys because I’d like to learn more about Ukraine. Last year I met an inspiring THS host who regularly travels to Ukraine to join the convoys that take aid and supplies over the border from Poland. Her descriptions of the country and the Ukranian people made me want to learn more and I spent a while researching the city they travel to.

Thanks for your vote Debbie!

Wow, what an interesting THS host, and an incredible thing to do.
