When a sit doesn’t go ahead due to the HO deciding to cancel your international sit last minute yet hasn’t officially cancelled on THS, would you decide to leave a factual review when the time comes ?
Or would you just leave it blank?
Personally, I would take the opportunity to leave a factual review. The fact that they never cancelled the Sit within the THS system, speaks volumes!
Homeowners are rated on the following categories:
Communication
Hospitality
Cleanliness
Pet behaviour
Accuracy of listing
If the sit never takes place / is cancelled, how would you be able to rate them accurately on those categories?
Interesting question. I would think THS would be inclined to remove the review if pressed by the HO but I’m interested to see everyone’s opinion on this one.
I would never leave a review for a sit that I haven’t done. Also wondering, is it even possible to leave a review for a sit that hasn’t been completed?
You can’t review something that hasn’t happened
If it was confirmed and they pulled out, but didn’t cancel the sit officially, I’d write a review with the facts. Reviews are meant to help prospective sitters (or hosts) and some folks would find that info useful, especially for sits abroad that end up cancelled.
I agree.
I would think that if the host cancel before the sit, you will probably not be able to leave a review?
But if they don’t cancel then that in itself is a problem also because the sitter will still be locked to the dates and not be able to find another sit - and if premium member can affect their sit cancellation insurance, if applicable. So not cancelling formally has potencially some severe consequenses for the sitter inflicted by the host.
Contact THS support and have the sit officially canceled.
I would probably have already spoken to THS to make sure the homeowner wasn’t going to claim I hadn’t shown up! But if it is still up there keeping you from applying to other sits and looking ugly, I’d definitely write a factual review as a warning to other sitters.
Think it depends on why they cancelled the sit @avocadotoast If it was flaky then a review would be helpful. If not, would want releasing so we could find another sit. We had a very flaky one (double cancel back to back Palma & Switzerland with two sets of flights ) that would loved to have “reviewed” & saved future sitters. They were eventually thrown off the site after lots of missing & poor reviews - quelle surprise! #forewarnedisforearmed
I would leave a review. I think that you could rate the “Communication” aspect quite easily. I would just state the fact that the HO cancelled x days prior to the sit and mention any damages you faced in the cost of flights, etc. Future sitters deserve to know. However, as others mentioned, if it’s still confirmed you won’t be able to get another sit during that time so you have to decide if it’s worth it for you. THS should post a “The HO cancelled this sit x days in advance” in the reviews section like Airbnb does. So if they have a pattern of cancelling sitters can be warned.
Definitely take the opportunity to do a review. One star in everything with explanation.
Depends on the circumstances. If they had a good reason to cancel last minute then definitely not, them not cancelling it with THS is understandable if their minds were on ill pets/relatives, or hospital etc. But if they didn’t have good reason… mmmmmmm, depends on the connection you have with them I suppose.
I saw a review for a sit the other day that didn’t go ahead. I found it confusing, especially as the sitter had awarded five stars for everything. Ultimately, the sit had been cancelled, but communication had been good so the review was positive. It was the only review for this HO and I don’t feel the sitter was in a position to award five stars for everything! I would be inclined either to leave no review, or to knock a star off and be frank about your experience.
Thank you to everyone who has shared their opinion and perspective on this matter. Due to respecting the privacy of the HO I won’t go into details of the incident on the forum at this time. I’m happy enough to share a frank review I think if the sit has still been uncancelled on the system by the end of the sit date and I’ll inevitably be receiving the prompts to leave review.
I’m currently receiving helpful prompts to ask how the sit is going and to give the HO an update
Thanks again everyone and wishing you all a good week ahead
It seems you are supposed to be in the middle of the sit now and there will be an opportunity for you to review. If you don’t, it will show as though you have completed the sit and, for some reason (usually negative) have decided not to leave a review. So, I would definitely leave a review no matter how nice they are or what the motive for cancellation was. It can be a very nice review or a not so nice one but it should be factual so everyone would know what happened.
It’s true there are categories you won’t be able to rate but you can make that clear.
@avocadotoast if the sit is still live and you are not bothered about finding a replacement sit at this time, I would go ahead and write an honest review when the sit dates end.
And, for future reference, if that happens again and the HO does not cancel the sit formally you can request THS to cancel it for you so you can go ahead and apply for other sits. We have had that experience.
