I have just completed my first international sit and had only had one video call before arriving. The owner has left a very poor review and I am both angry and disappointed. This is the first poor review I have received. It seems she wanted more a servant than a house sitter. Is this something that I should take as unusual or something that happens. Appreciate advice xx
Sorry to hear that this happened to you.
I have been there too. In my experience it’s rare, but jt does happen.
Out of 40 sits so far, two times I felt exploited and yes, treated like a servant.
It feels horrible. However, most pet owners have been lovely. The pets have ALL been lovely
Feel free to private message me if you’d like some advice. I’m careful about what I say in the forum, because some threads quickly turn into arguments.
The fact that it was an international sit is irrelevant and a single video call is common.
So it boils down to the content and honesty of their review
If the review was honest in its content but the home host obviously was expecting more of you than you think is appropriate for your role as a sitter then it sounds like a lack of communication issue.
If the review was blatent lies then you should contact membership services and raise a complaint.
Welcome to the forum.
It’s really difficult to say much helpful without knowing more details like stars or the actual review which you may not want to share.
That said it’s completely normal to have just one call before an international sit.
Since you’re going international there may be some cultural differences between what you’re used to and what the owner is used to but I wouldn’t be surprised if they expected more of a servant, cultural differences or not. Some owners are just that way. Others are lovely.
If you have looked after the home (left it clean and in the same condition you found without re-arranging things, brought in the mail etc), looked after the pets (fed them and walked them according to what they’re used to, played with them etc.) and managed to do that while not bugging the owner every day with questions while simultaneously sending them just the right amount of pet pictures on just the right schedule then that should really be it Simples
You could complain to THS if the review is dishonest or just nasty but THS seem to distance themselves from any responsibility in this area. I’m not saying don’t do it, just don’t expect much and certainly not the removal.
You can reply to the review so anyone looking at it will see your response. In that case my advice and that of many on here would be to keep it brief, address the shortcomings they mentioned which may not be factual without sounding bitter (hard I know), mention improvement in any areas where you were really lacking, and mostly try to keep it factual without too much emotion.
Eg
Sitter was uncommunicative during sit and hardly sent any pictures - I sent you pictures of Fido every couple of days. i would have been happy to send more regularly or on any schedule you wished if you had met mw know you needed more
The house wasn’t clean enough - I cleaned throughout my stay and spent 3 hours on the final day cleaning. I strived to leave the house cleaner than I found and think I achieved this.
Etc
Hang in there. Not all sits are bad
Hello @EileenK26 and welcome.
You are certainly not alone, as both home hosts and THsitters have posted similarly.
The best suggestions I’ve read is to reply to the review factually, concisely and with little to no emotion.
And if you feel the review is not representative of your effort then contact MS. They may not give you the outcome you desire but still, it is worth contacting MS.
I’ll just underscore that the sit being “international” does not seem relevant…
Don’t know the specifics of your sit gone wrong, so my general advice would be to pay close attention to listings and reviews before applying for any sit, for starters. I always note the tone in which a host writes — like if the listing sounds as if they’re setting out orders and the reviews don’t mention that they’re nice folks, I’ll skip it, no matter how great a sit it might look like otherwise. Likewise if we do a video or phone chat and they seem to think only of themselves, their home and their pets — good hosts are considerate of sitters.
Personally, I never even look beyond the first photo when I start reviewing a listing — I read the entire listing and reviews closely before I even bother looking at the other pictures. That’s because humans are easily swayed by visuals, but jerky, entitled or inconsiderate hosts can easily be a deal-breaker for any sit.
