US Citizens Who Are Global Nomads – Medical Insurance When Visiting the US

Hi all,

This is a question specifically for US citizens who are global nomads or long-term travelers. When you visit the US (but don’t live there full-time), what do you personally do for medical insurance coverage during that time?

For example, I use World Nomads when I’m traveling internationally, but they don’t cover trips to the US. So when you’re back in the States for a visit, what short-term medical insurance do you actually buy to cover yourself?

Just to clarify:

  • I’m looking for real-life examples of what you do.
  • I’d like to know the name(s) of specific insurers.
  • I really appreciate input from fellow US citizens who’ve had to figure this out.

Thanks in advance!

I can’t really help you with what you specifically need, but as no one else has answered, I’ll tell you what we do:

We maintain a legal address in the US (a friend’s house) for the purpose of getting mail, voting, car liability insurance and health insurance. I’m on Medicare, which I pay even though I’m not there for much of the year.
