When it goes really well...isn't it amazing?!

I’ve recently completed a wonderful sit.

In the beginning before I accepted the sit, I had a few reservations. The host came across as extremely thorough (which isn’t such a bad thing) but it can be off-putting to some who prefer a more relaxed sit. This sit was 2 dogs & a guinea pig but I accepted it because my gut told me to, even though I felt as though I was fighting it.

I then received the word document ‘Welcome Guide’ - well I nearly fell off my chair as it was 10 A4 pages long. There were a lot of “must do this & must do that”. Also a few "Do not"s. The word “must” felt very harsh but I went with it. It was also the hosts’ first experience of using THS so no reviews to go by. I’ve been trying to understand people a bit better over the past 12 months and I’ve learnt that we are all different. We all have different ways of communicating but I have also learnt that perhaps we judge too quickly. So I let this one play out…

Well…it’s been my most favourite sit to date! The home was immaculate, comfortable, well equipped, everything was labelled (I sensed a bit of OCD!), the dogs were incredibly well trained & well behaved and communication was excellent. I had full instructions of what to do when things could have gone wrong (which they did as there was a problem with the water tank, but how to resolve was in the WG & it was fine)

I concluded that all of the above was just the hosts way of communication and although it was overkill, I rolled with it and the sit was just wonderful. I’d go back in a heartbeat!

It’s in stark comparison to another recent sit where the host was more my “type of person” - fairly chilled, relaxed, a bit of humour in messages etc BUT she didn’t provide fresh bedding for us (all sheets in all 4 bedrooms were stained and littered with food crumbs) and the dog was really not well trained. Looking back, I thought this example would have been a better sit than my most recent!

I just wanted to share

Just goes to show how wrong we can be sometimes. Did you have a video call with both these owners?

Glad things went well for you.

I had a sit where the welcome guide came across as micromanaging, but I went ahead with it anyway, because I got good signals otherwise. Turned out fine. And they invited me back. But who knows? Things could’ve gone sideways.

All we can do is use our best judgment. And if things generally work out, then probably no adjustments needed in finding matches. But for folks — whether hosts or sitters — who repeatedly run into problems, they probably should reassess and adjust, unless they’re OK with repeatedly having issues.

My POV is, sitting is icing. If it were problematic or stressful, I just wouldn’t bother. I’ve had overwhelmingly good sits.

Hiccups can happen, but that’s built into sitting. Folks who are adaptable, proactive, good at problem-solving and communicating will tend to do the best with sitting. It’s also helpful to expect challenges. Otherwise, probably better to stay home if someone wants everything to be consistent and easier.

When I pick hosts, I ask myself: If things went significantly wrong, would they be good partners? That’s useful to consider in relationships of many sorts, because life is never perfection.
