Everything in me and everything I know from being with both humans and non-humans says the vet is wrong about the scent.
I was thinking the same, Marion. I would still take their human’s shirt/sweater and put it next to the dog as a little pillow. With all due respect, who care what the vet says - I would want to know that I did everything I could to make his last days easier. *You know what I mean, hopefully he pulls through.
The latest update is that my hosts will return early from their trip, so they can see their beloved dog.
I’m glad, because I think it will comfort her and them. So they’ll be back tomorrow evening and I’ll leave for a hotel. They kindly offered to pay for that. And we’re going to coordinate so I can see the dog with them.
There’s not been any improvement in her condition, though she’s stable at least. She’s such a sweet little soul, I feel the privilege of having given her quality time before all of this happened.
@Marion, thank you for your kind comment. I don’t know whether dogs or humans get to choose, but I hope so.
In this case, I narrowly ended up taking this sit. Originally, I’d applied for two in the same area and I ended up with this one only because this host scheduled our video chat hours before the other host, who was disappointed. (I’d let both of them pick timing and they coincidentally picked the same date to video chat. This host offered me the sit at the end of our video chat, so I then canceled my application with the other host.)
Thinking of you, your sit dog and their owners, @Maggie8K. What a sad situation to happen, though I’m very glad that you have been there and have handled things so remarkably well. I’m sure the owners are very grateful.
Thanks, @botvot. She’s in an emergency clinic. The public isn’t normally allowed into the big room where multiple vets and others are working on pets and otherwise monitoring them. So if the vet says no, you can’t enter. But happily I will get to see her by coordinating with her family, once they return.
Update on my sit dog: Her humans cut their trip short and arrived home this evening. Then six of us went and hugged and petted the sweet pup before the vet put her to sleep.
Her primary human — who’d raised her since she was months old — held her as she drifted off.
She was a much loved dog. Her humans made a grueling trip back in a rush and even the sister of one of them flew from another state to say goodbye. A pair of their good friends came to say goodbye as well.
Though I knew her for a relatively short time, it was enough to love her, to now miss her.
We’re so lucky to have pets.
@Maggie8K Oh such sadness, but so pleased the family all made it back to say their goodbyes. I am sure she felt absolute love as she drifted off, and everyone was so grateful to you for being there with her in her last days. Pets are truly special and creep into our hearts so quickly. Sending strength all around.
Oh so sad. You were the perfect companion for her in her last days, and it was so good that her family could be with her as she passed - I’m sure they all appreciated the comfort and care that you gave.
We have just begun a last minute weekend sit just an hour from home. We actually did a different sit in the same village 3.5 years ago. It’s a beautiful location in the Wye Valley, UK.
Pippin, a gorgeous and very lively Springer Spaniel who is almost 1.
And Deano a friendly cat who loves a lap.
@Maggie8K Thinking of you - fortunately haven’t had to face this. I sat a trio in Austin a few years ago and 1 was ailing - not eating well, kind of lethargic. But I think I managed to make him comfortable - about a week after the sit the HO let me know that they had eventually diagnosed cancer and put the dog down.
Another sit with a very old pup - the HO and I actually discussed the possibility of the pup taking a turn and the HO had already had the conversation with the vet about when the vet would take action. Again, the pup did well with me. But I was so happy that the HO had thought about the possibility.
Thank you, @toml.
Such tough decisions. It’s so hard to let them go, isn’t it? But however long we have with pets, we are fortunate.
Won’t forget this sweet girl.
Beautiful dog and great photo!
He’s a beauty
On my 4th sit with the lovely Bentley in beautiful Norfolk. He’s a little under the weather so extra TLC and cuddles. Poor lad’s on meds too.
Doing a ‘close to home’ sit. Houston TX, The Heights. Walkable neighborhood with shops and restaurants. Since this is south Texas, this was a great weekend because temps were in the 60°s. Very soon it will be very hot .
Savvy is a sweet , easy going pup and good on the leash.
I live north of Houston and I enjoy being near downtown with music, culture, and museums. I’m surrounded by historical homes.

@andrealovesanimals What a cutie!
