Are homeowners happy to accept foreign sitters yet?

We’ve done this house sit before and we love the area. It’s within walking distance to the FastCats and very convenient to most everything. This will be our third time in Brisbane but our first time in the winter. Looking forward to the lovely weather.

Not US, but I’m Canadian. Our travel advisories are being lifted as of Feb 28 so it means we can travel with the medical insurance that come with our credit card.

We’ve started applying for sits in England for May/June and have tentatively been accepted for one so far. I suspect some homeowners in the UK might be hesitant to accept sitters from overseas but there are a lot out there so I don’t think it’s impossible.

Other special considerations - I’ve noticed car rentals are waaaaay more expensive than the last time we housesit in the UK (fall 2019).

Hi @Kelownagurl and @BunnyCat, I’m Australian and heading to England from mid June to end of September and have 8 sits booked, so some UK owners are definitely booking international sitters. Go for it!

We’re looking at about $2100-2400 for 28 days I think. But we’ll get it because we’ve saved on car rentals for that past two years…

I have three sits coming up in England, two of which accepted me while I was still in the US. Yes, car rental prices now come with sticker shock, but I try to remind myself that I’m not paying for lodging and I haven’t traveled for two years.
Good luck!

I’m from Australia @BunnyCat and have 2 confirmed sits in the UK for Dec 2022. I’ve had a couple of knock backs due to not geing from the UK.

Thanks so much, Angela! I’ll definitely check this out. I’m kind of changing my "plans” on the fly here as I travel Europe, and may arrive in England a month earlier. So I’ll be looking for even more sits — and a car for much longer!

You could buy a run around for about half that price then sell it again when you leave. The rental prices are ridiculous. We fly into Glasgow tomorrow, first stop garage 10 miles from the airport to buy an old but reliable car for our six week stay. The garage owner has already indicated he will be willing to buy it back when we leave at a reduced price of course but it’s still cheaper than renting.

As long as nothing goes wrong with the car of course……whereas you’d be covered with a rental

Add break down cover onto your insurance. Take a year insurance out then claim back the unused part. Still works out cheaper than a rental car for six weeks. I’ve done my homework.

How do you handle insurance then? I thought you had to be a UK resident to get car insurance. Does it cover collision and theft as well?

Also, where do you start when looking for buy a vehicle that’s available the day you arrive, and can be sold again when you return? It seems like a lot of hassle but maybe it’s worth it?

Here, doing the paperwork and getting insurance can take a half day at least. Not sure I want to be dealing with that the day I land, and haven’t slept for 24 hours. Also, do you just go buy a car online without looking at it first?

I guess if we were planning to stay for several months, it might feel like the risk is worth it but I’m certainly curious to learn more.

Whoa! May I ask how you found him/arranged this?

We are UK citizens so it’s easy for us. In the United States we have registered with a company in South Dakota called Americas Mail Box. It gives us a US address so we can register cars, get insurance, even get a US bank account. It will also accept forward mai” from the UK and Mail it to us in the US and Canada.

Just got lucky. Replied to an advert for a car for sale and started talking to him. I know the deal will be to his advantage but it’s not going to cost us £1200 for 6 weeks.

Very clever of you — good luck with it!

I think because I had 3 international sitters cancel on me out of my last 3 sit posts, I’m hesitant on accepting foreign sitters. I need to keep my eye on things for the next few months

It is risky, but things are slowly opening up again.
