And I think I should add in our listing that we have double and single mattress toppers available.
Some hosts go out of their way, knowing that beds vary in comfort and personal preference.
One let me know that if I didnāt like the mattress topper, I should feel free to remove it. They had also let me choose from among three beautifully decorated en suite bedrooms, including the master. They pointed out which room was quietest and warmest.
On another sit, the hosts changed all the linens in the master bedroom on the day they left and invited me to switch from the guest room (I had arrived the day before), because it had the biggest bed, nicest view and best bathroom.
On a more recent sit, I was offered a terrific guest suite with a big, comfortable bed, kitchenette and French doors to a beautiful yard. Then the host also showed me a guest room upstairs and said if I didnāt like the bed downstairs, Iād be welcome to sleep in the other room, or I could sleep in both if I wanted to switch things up.
Seemed like the right place to ask what is a āUK DOUBLE BEDā? (Pasted from listing. ) - and what is a 3/4 bed?
Sounds small, both of themā¦
You just reminded me @Garfield
while I was in the USA I had the opportunity twice to sleep in California King sized beds. Which are larger than any bed Iāve ever seen ever. I could sleep across the bed without my legs going over the edge and Iām average/tall in height. There is even special pillows that are for these giant beds. Big long pillows. 5 heads could rest upon them hahaha
@Garfield you reminded me of an old 2022 post that includes a useful image of various bed sizes in the UK, US, and Australia. Check this out:
Whenever we want to know bed size we ask for the dimensions in cm because when hosts just give names its often not helpful- e g a king or Queen size in UK is not the same as in the US. We just started a new sit in Malaysia. The (UK) hosts told us the bed was a UK kingsize (which I know is 150 x200cm) We prefer bigger so were delighted to find the bed is actually much bigger- more like 180 and super comforrable. Makes a big difference on a 6 week sit!
Learn something everyday! You just made me look up bedsizes. A queen is actually a SMALL double bed in the UK while a king in the UK is the same size as a queen in the US! Meanwhile the UK as other sizes like āemperorā while the US has āCalifornia King.ā Who knew? And should I update my listing to make it international?
@Marion
Yes- good idea! I would suggest you put the bed size in centimetres! Then there can be no confusion!
In France beds are described as āsimpleā or ādoubleā with the cm size next to it. 140cm is a standard double, then you have 160cm, 180cm and 200cm (very rare!). We bought a bed in England in 1991 and were talked into getting it in 150cm. We moved to France 3 years later and replacing a mattress that size has been a headache ever since. I can understand why Americans get such large beds when I see the size of some houses. (Iām American myself but lived in older areas that had smaller houses than one sees elsewhere.)
Time to buy a bigger bed! 150cm is too small these days anyway
I would need a bigger home to put it in!
@marion Actually my comment about a bigger bed was for @KChev with their mattress size issue!
In your case just mention the bed size in cm for clarity. Not everyone needs a bigger bed!
Think of it as a hotel room. The bed is the largest furniture in the home in the largest room. The guest room could be litterally thatā¦
So far the beds have been fine, although I do look at the listing photos and wonāt apply if there is a sofa bed or futon. Maybe in varies by country?
A UK double bed is 4 foot 6 inches and about 6 foot long (=137 cm x 183 cm) or 140 cm x 180 cm for short, I think. Beware of a small double, which is 4 foot by 6 foot.
