Black Sea travel ideas

Looking for some ideas and advice on nice places on the Black Sea to spend 2-3 weeks in May. We’ll be finishing up in Istanbul around 12th May and thinking we should make the most of our time in that general region. Probably looking for 1-3 places to spend 5-7 days each. What makes your suggestion worthwhile? I think because it spans a few countries, it’s hard to find targeted advice, e.g. Tripadvisor Forum. Or any areas you’d definitely avoid?

I thought I’d tag @Cuttlefish and @Sam_F to get started, but anyone else, please jump in. Tx.

Places that we’ve been recommended continually to visit on the Black Sea @botvot are Trabzon (incredible monastery) & Sinop (architecture & history) and possibly Amsara (chilled beaches) but have no firsthand knowledge, sorry! That area is in the plan for a road trip in the summer as we have a sit in Oylat. This blog looked quite good

Batumi in Georgia is also on our radar and popular with Turks. Hopefully @Sam_F will be more help. Also @AndyAysegul might have some tips for the homeland #lovearoadtrip 🇹🇷

We spend a lot of time during the year in Bulgaria. Not at the sea, but I’ve heard nice things about Varna.

You will love the Black Sea coast. Go in late summer to catch the best weather. Late August / September is normally best. It can be quite cloudy during June / July. We did this trip a couple of years back https://turkish-travels.com/category/black-sea/ for places we visited. I just wish I had taken more videos and photos of the trip. Definitely visit Batumi. We are planning a road trip again this year from Marmaris through to Mersin. It’s been a while since we did this area of Turkey.

I’ve yet to go to the Black Sea, but I do know there are some incredible coastal resorts in Romania that you should definitely check out! Constanta looks beautiful too. There’s a documentary on Netflix called ‘Flavours of Romania,’ and in Season 2 episode 3 (Dobrogea) Charlie (the host) explores some really nice areas & resorts along the coast, and goes sailing too :sailboat: The Danube Delta also starts from that region, flowing into the Black Sea, which has an incredible & unique ecosystem & native wildlife found only in that region.

Hi @botvot and thank you for tagging me on this thread. :slightly_smiling_face:

Both of my recommendations can be found in the Burgas region of Bulgaria, which is about 4 hours drive from Istanbul. The first is just to the South of Burgas and is the beach resort of Sozopol. The Old Town is full of cobbled streets and Revival architecture and sits on a spit of land. Within walking distance of the Old Town are several beautiful sandy beaches which include Central and Harmanite, to name but two.

Lying to the North of Burgas is another beautiful seaside town called Nessebar which sits on a rocky peninsula. Here, you will find the influence of the Greeks who lived here in the 6th century BC including an acropolis, a temple of Apollo and an agora. Once again you will find several beaches here in the vicinity of this seaside town including Old Town beach and Nessebar beach.

As you are travelling there in May you shouldn’t have a problem but in the height of summer both these places are exceptionally busy. I hope you find this information helpful and enjoy exploring the Black Sea coast.
