Fake Profile and Urgent Request to Sit

I just received an urgent request for a petsit. Just wanted to warn other sitters on this site to use your best discretion when vetting owners. This came from a man who needs a sitter in New York for his German Shepard. Many more weird things about it. Wish I could share screenshots. But I have emailed TrustedHousesitters about it, so hopefully they’ll look into it. I hope they screen owners like they screen sitters. That’s all. Just be safe out there!

Hi @laviva21

I can see that Therese has confirmed with you privately that the team are looking into this, and if I get any more information, I’d be happy to feed back on this post in case anyone’s interested to know the outcome.

We got the same message from the person claiming to be in NY. We couldn’t find any info on the person who posted it. We did not respond. Tried to contact Trusted Housesitters to report it but there was no way to do it. Chat bot was useless.

@Mr.C you can report it to member services by e-mail: support@trustedhousesitters.com

@Mr.C & @laviva21 was this through your THS inbox ?

The Homeowners Identity is not verified by THS only sitters .

yes this is in my trustedhousesitters Inbox.

Levia

I received it as well.

@Jenny Yes please report back now more members have reported that they also received same e-mail @SLK @laviva21 @Mr.C

Why aren’t Owners screened to the SAME degree as Sitters?

Is it true that an Owner could be a criminal—someone who assaulted and/or raped someone, was convicted, spent time in prison, and is now out of prison? THAT criminal can be an Owner on THS? And Sitters would not have a clue?

No screening for Owners?

Someone convicted of armed robbery, or identity theft, or selling illicit drugs? These people can be Owners?

Of course. So can sitters. So could anybody you sat next to at a concert. Or in church.

In the USA, I believe that Sitters undergo a background check, and if certain facts are discovered, the Sitters are probably rejected.

I would love to understand this process.

I agree @PVGemini that home hosts should be required to meet the same “vetting” standard as THsitters, i.e., U.S. sitters.
I am both on the network.

Hi everyone

I just wanted to pop on and let you know that the situation reported by OP is being investigated at the moment.

Unfortunately I can’t give any more information on that, but the team are looking at it at the moment.

If there’s anything else I can share in future, then I’ll pop back and let you know.
