You do realize it will be mostly dark at that time of year. Hour maybe of sun.
If you are going to Anchorage, you could also just go to a consignment or Salvation Army type shop. If you are doing an activity where you need specialized clothing (skiiing, snowshoeing, etc.) most of the shops will have that type of clothing as well. Good luck and have an AWESOME time. Now if you will be there during the long days, you will not need winter clothing bc that’s in the summer! LOL!!!
We were due to go on an Ice Road Trucker ‘safari’ in 2020 but didn’t due to Covid then other big trips we’d planned were piled up which we’ve caught up on now. So it’s been on my bucket list for a while… hubby is a retired Geologist so has always wanted to visit remote Alaska ……it might not be practical/possible for us now we’re older but I’m using this thread to explore the possibility….we’re adventurers as our hobby for 20 years was climbing volcanoes but we’re not fit enough these days sadly.
WInd chills can certainly get that cold! I live in northern Wisconsin and it can be brutal even here.
- 54° Celsius?
I’m considering the average temperature, wouldn’t want @BonnyinBrighton to get scared off
Mind you air con can be pretty fierce so we’d be ‘conditioned’
I’ve been on a few winter sits (not that freezing but cold) where the owner offered me her jacket and gear which was very much appreciated especially when taking the dog out for toilet breaks and walks. So you could always ask especially if the size is compatible…
I wouldn’t expect to borrow clothing, but you could always ask.
When I sat in Scotland during winter, my host offered me jackets to borrow, unasked. But I’d gone prepared with layers, gloves, hoodies and hats. When I sat in Seattle and there was ice/snow, my hosts said I could borrow a set of spiky things that attached to shoes, to avoid slipping. I’d packed layers.
My simple advice is don’t, unless prepared to carry extra bags of warm clothing.
Your body would take a lot of adjusting from a Perth Summer to Alaskan Winter, possibly making your time there miserable.
I’m sure there would be more temperate sits available.
Yes lots of more temperate sits but not in Alaska …. the point is we’re looking at all possibilities in January/February on our way back from Australia to the UK. Our resilience to ‘being miserable’ is pretty high tbh, and all adventures involve a bit of a struggle to adapt, it’s what makes it ‘interesting’. We’ve slept in hammocks strung between trees to avoid ‘biting things’ (the ropes are covered in repellant oils) and slept on a booming and thumping volcano
…. it’s all about the experience.
Get a couple of big suitcases, put more clothes in and take plenty of money in case you need any more.
Problem sorted, logically and independently
The solution was suggested higher up- and a lot cheaper than buying unnecessary suitcases, and clothes, plus paying for bags in the hold and dealing with airport transfers! Plus the small airplane flights out of Anchorage have a limit on bags.
Glad you’re sorted, have fun
What about the flying insects?
You string up a mosquito net to a branch, and again douse the string in repellant oils. The main insects to avoid were the ants- nothing worse than waking up with ants on your face!
I’m married to a now retired Geologist which has involved ‘holidays’ to some very remote places …. just to look at an ‘outcrop’ of rock or fossilised tree stumps….
Again, i admire your dedication to the cause, I’ll stick to more temperate climes (but hoping for a warmer UK spell soon )
Fossilised tree stumps? Pleasant temperatures in Jan/Feb? How about California’s Petrified Forest? There’s plenty of other geology on offer too (and wine!)
Winter can be so beautiful. Especially new falling snow and how it can sparkle like diamonds if its cold enough to be the fluffy stuff. Its just 6 months of it can be a tad too much!
@BonnyinBrighton I found that there are not too many Jan/Feb sits listed yet. Be patient. We’re looking for something special in Feb (more temperate!!) and I have just realised that I’ll have to be patient as it’s slim pickings and I’m not going to settle for a mediocre location or sit just to get it booked already.
