It’s not normal but the owner has stated that it would be up to the sitters if they wished to make some extra money, otherwise the dates would be blocked out. I can see one sitter took the opportunity and earnt £400. What concerns me is that there are a lot of missing reviews from sitters and I would imagine that the house would not be super clean on arrival - the owner indicates that and the last sitter has docked a star for cleanliness. However, it seems the sitters who have reviewed have enjoyed their stay.
I would think it is allowed as it is put in the listing.
Personally, combined with stating you shouldn’t expect it to be all clean because «they have dogs» (as one can pay someone to look after airbnb, why not make sure it is clean for a sitter? Don’t get it.), one dog might mark his territory on your belongings and not consistent in getting/ giving reviews - it might work out lovely, but… Ofc much better it is there so one can make an informed choice.
I don’ t understand your complaint, the home host can not make it any clearer that the opportunity to earn money whilst you are sitting is there if you want it, if you don’t then you don’t have to.
Personally, If we ever came across a sit we fancied doing with this opportunity, we would most probably take it.
“Should it be of interest, many of our previous sitters have enjoyed the opportunity to ‘earn while they sit’. It is by no means a requirement but we have had great feedback from our sitters who have benefitted from taking care of the adjacent Airbnb accommodation . For the sake of clarity, please note that we are happy to block the dates for your sit so that the airbnb is empty during your stay, or if you prefer we can leave the dates open and any stays that come about during that time you can earn from by taking care of the turn-arounds. Again please note that this is an optional extra, and we can’t guarantee if people book. However, as a guide one of our more recent sitters had approximately £400 paid directly into their account for looking after the airbnb suite during their sit. Another returning sitter was delighted as she used the opportunity to pay for UK driving lessons! If you like the sound of that then we can talk about it when we ‘meet’. However, if you have no interest in it then be assured that it won’t affect your application. The primary purpose for having you here is to care for the dogs and look after the house - anything else is just a bonus!”
Hi @Fatamorgana
As someone who has unwittingly ended up doing meet-and-greets, laundry, and cleaning for Air BnBs on an unpaid basis as part of sits in the past, the opportunity to earn money from being involved in doing so seems good to me.
It sounds as though the home owners are ideally looking to build an ongoing relationship with a sitter, so for someone local to the area it could prove to be a mutually beneficial arrangement.
Yes, you are right, Colin. I overreacted because for me this would be a red flag. I understand that it isn’t for others.
