In Ireland, there is at least one place called Kill.
It comes from the Irish word for church!
Early settlers in the US state of Kentucky liked to name places after animals. Here are a few of the local town names:
- Monkeys Eyebrow
- Possum Trot
- Rabbit Hash
- Pig
- Hippo
(Kentucky in the early settler days had possums, rabbits and pigs, but certainly no monkeys or hippos, except of course these towns! )
And there’s also Blandville and Oddville, KY.
Reading all these silly town names really makes you wonder, what were the founding folks thinking?!
Maybe it’s a southern or country thing— these animal names. I always remark when we drive past a place in Virginia called Frog Level.
