As we know, all cats are amazing, but yesterday was Black Cat Appreciation Day.
I’ve read that black cats are often the last to be adopted from shelters. When I adopted my house panther Walter, the rescue manager told me that some people still believe old superstitions, and even something as simple as being harder to photograph can mean they get overlooked. I think they’re just as loving and full of personality as any other cat.
In fact, in some cultures, black cats are seen as lucky. Sadly, they still tend to wait much longer for homes than other cats, and around Halloween, some shelters even pause adoptions to keep them safe.
So even though the official day was yesterday, I thought we could show a little extra appreciation for black cats. They deserve it just as much as any other.
If you’ve ever loved a black cat, share a photo or a story!
My hosts say their cats have fallen hard for me. I’d say the feeling is mutual. (There’s a little white one who’s more skittish, but she’s warmed and I can tell she loves me, too.)
Yes! Actually this little lady was yawning, not scary at all! She was a bed marker, but only when her housemate cat gave her “the look”… I couldn’t believe the HO let her I too the bedroom at all, but she did have her charms.
I often sit black cats and had one myself. I know they are hard to place and adoption places struggle. How many people today still associate them with Witches? We need to move on!
Our lovely, gentle, stubborn Luke. His (cute but quite bossy) sister died at the beginning of the year, and since then he has become very cuddly and talkative.
Finn and Kelly were not only lovable, they were super crafty food thieves. They spent every night sleeping with me, except the day that they boycotted me — I had hidden their food canisters, so they couldn’t break in.
They opened cabinets, dug through trash and pounced on ANY food, including the dog’s kibble. Their humans didn’t offer them treats, because they were so adept at thieving.
Their humans had gone to adopt one cat, but they were told that they couldn’t take one without the other, because they were bonded brothers. I joke that they were a gang.
I’ve looked at this topic for days and haven’t been able to reply because every time I think of all the black cats I have loved, and still love, I start crying! I love them ALL.
8 years old in the first picture. Second one taken his last morning. We had sitters looking after him on his 20th birthday and I wondered if he’d last till we got back. They took great care of him.
A beautiful black cat, Caniac, which I am currently petsitting. She’s such a sweetheart. The owner mentioned how she is shy and typically would take a couple days to warm up to new people, but she took to me immediately. I’ve enjoyed my special relationship with this sweet black cat who opened her heart to me so readily
