I have lived 35 years in Tasmania, immigrated from Germany 1986. Over the last 10 years I also have lived extended times in Thailand where I have a property in the north of the country. During these last 10 years I have lived a bit like a gypsy, times in Europe, Thailand and Australia and have been lucky to secure wonderful house sits in several countries. I also have used house sitters for my home in Thailand.
When Covit started last year I was in Thailand where my adult daughter had joined me for 3 month. We decided to fly back to Tasmania on the 22nd of March and just managed to get out with one of the very last flights. I am so grateful that Tasmania is my home at those very difficult times. Here we have a pretty normal life.
I used to have wonderful dogs and cats. Also had a couple of real Thai dogs in Thailand which are so beautiful and loyal. At the moment I am looking after two cats for 4 month for a friend who has to be in Melbourne for medical reasons. I am looking forward to more travels particularly visiting my family in Germany. Cheers to all of you, stay safe, Mechthild
Hey Mechthild, I’m also housesitting in Tassie. We are basing ourselves around the Launceston area and have been sitting in Berriedale, Devonport, Stanley, Ulverstone, Railton, Westbury, Exetor, Newnham with upcoming sits in Mowbray, Hillwood and some repeats. If you’re nearby, let’s meet up!
Adrienne
Hello @Mechthild welcome to the forum and thank you for your wonderful introduction. You must have so many amazing stories to tell and memories to share of your travels and life in Thailand, so fortunate that you were able to get the flight last March, I had a similar experience getting on the last flight out of Seattle into London, each and every one of us I’m sure, will remember where we were in 2020.
We look forward to sharing in more of your experiences and getting to know you and the pets you’ve had and cared for better. For now it sounds as if you are in the right place at the right time for you, the kitty you are caring for and your dear friend.
Thank you again for joining and sharing.

Hi @Adrienne Welcome to the forum and you’ve found a fellow Tassie sitter, that’s brilliant I hope you manage to connect.
Thank you so much for joining and for sharing your intro, we look forward to hearing more about your THS adventures and the pets you’ve cared for.

Hi Adrianne, nice to hear from you I am in Hobart for the next 4 month. Let me know if you come down here.
Cheers,
Mechthild
Hello Metchtild I saw your title with Tasmania in it and had to read your post. I am from Melbourne originally but Tasmania is without doubt my favourite place in Australia. I did two long sits (7mth then 8mth) in Carlton River, just beyond Sorell and it was a great way to live as a local. Thanks for the enjoyable read! Regards, Lisa
Hi Lisa, yes Tasmania is certainly a special place and very much my home. I like Melbourne too but only for shorter stays; I have very good friends there who moved back to Melbourne 4 years ago after having lived in Tassie for 35 years. I am hoping that I will see them soon again.
Regards, Mechthild
I’m based in Launceston with sits throughout the year (one is 3 months over winter) ending in late September. We arrived from New Zealand in January. Not sure what our next plans will be, but happy to be exploring this beautiful island.
Hi @Mechthild and @Adrienne
Lovely to meet you both virtually😊 Mechthild, I see you are based in Hobart currently as I am. Let me know if you would like to catch up for a coffee sometime as it is always fun to meet a fellow traveller. And Adrienne, if you are ever down this way and similarly want to catch up for coffee, it would be a pleasure to meet you. Cheers Fran
Hi Franti,
nice to hear from you. Yes I am more then happy to catch up for coffee. I am on the Eastern Shore at the moment but can come to town. Cheers, Mechthild
Thanks Mechthild, I’ve sent you a message.
Cheers
