Just had this battle @Smiley and nearly lost an arm as the cat hated the pill popper thing. Despite the HOs assurance that there was no other option, crushing it and then rubbing a bit of chicken breast in the powder & job done! #andstillhavetwoarms
Just a warning that while some pills are effective when crushed , others can have dangerous effects as they are absorbed too quickly into the blood stream when crushed causing a temporary overdose .
( I know this from an aunt who struggled to swallow her prescribed pills and had to be rushed to hospital and nearly died because she had decided to crushed her pills to be able to take them .) It applies to pet medication too.
Additionally some pills when crushed risk damaging the pet’s oesophagus or stomach. This is because the medication will no longer be protected by the outer coating of the pill.
You can check the information that comes with the pills it will say if they are suitable for crushing or mixing with food .
Back to the fun stuff
Oops, thanks @Silversitters. Have never heard that with animal pills in more than 50 years of having pets. The HOs (& the cat) were all fine fortunately but will double check next time. #insideinfo
Or in a piece of cheese
#triedthatandrejected @Smiley
Or pate/sausage?
This was meant to be a fun post, but it’s got all serious
It was a good one @Smiley - just look at those eyes of hatred before we did battle!
Wow! You do need the armour.
Go on if you think you are brave enough!
Or in a pill pocket @Smiley @Cuttlefish
Don’t know whether this would work in your circumstances, but I’ve sometimes put a pill in a pill pocket (or maybe use fish paste for cats) and, oops, dropped it on the ground “accidentally.” Suddenly, they have to gobble it up before I “noticed.”
Over the summer I sat 2 weeks with a 15 yo 15 lb (at the most) Coton de Tulear (in the picture he doesn’t look like a cotton ball because he has had his summer trim.)
Jacko took lots of pills - allergy, joint problems, muscle problems - 4 or 5 pills morning and evening. He didn’t like pill pockets and if you tried to hide a pill in his wet dog food, he would dig it out and leave it. He also liked variety in the pill masquerades. The HO left me 3 kinds of sliced lunch meat, liverwurst, cheese curds, soft cheeses. I’d have to use 2 or 3 different masks at each pill session and vary it from morning to evening and day to day. It got to be a fun challenge figuring out what to use each time. He was a fun dog to sit and quite easy except for hiding the pills. I guess I did okay as I’ve been invited back.
Interesting story about the breed - Coton de Tulear - Wikipedia
We’ve done a couple of sits where the homeowners asked us to put the pill into a marshmallow or peanut butter - both worked like a charm!
