I had no problems driving in Pittsburgh during rainy or nice weather. Have been there many times over the years. I wouldn’t want to attempt it during snow or ice if I had no reason to and/or could avoid winter there. Like I’d sit there during any other season.
I have a cat sit planned for Philadelphia (also in the state of Pennsylvania, but that part is flat) during winter, with the host offering me use of their car. But I won’t risk driving someone else’s car in snow. In that case, the sit home is within easy walking distance of lots of amenities and I can alway use a ride share occasionally if needed in snow. I mention that, because hosts who can put themselves in place of visitors — imagine what their needs / concerns would be — can more readily address them in their listings.
For context for folks who aren’t familiar with U.S. cities / states: Pittsburgh has one of the worst winter weather and driving conditions in the country. Many other places get snow in the U.S., but they usually have flat, wide roads, not the hills of Pittsburgh.
Yeah but it’s a fabulous city for walkers. So many different kinds of neighborhoods! The bus system is very good and the funiculars are unique. Ubers aren’t very expenisve if in a rush or bad weather.
Agree with all of that, but all of that is better when it’s not freezing / snowing. That’s challenging for attracting anyone who doesn’t have specific need to be in Pittsburgh during its toughest season.
True. And maybe some folks relish snow or might find it a novelty.
Some cities / towns do Christmas and New Year’s well. Like NYC is a unique holiday experience. I remember one bitterly cold winter there, though, when I had to put on every bit of clothing I’d packed and still froze. The wind cut right through us, forcing us to repeatedly duck into doorways for relief.
I keep that in mind with waiting for public transit like buses or light rail, which also can be delayed by snow and ice. Being a tourist during winter can be tougher than say commuting for work, because you’re outdoors more often in various cases.
