Stays in a small town

I am interested in joining; however, I live in a small lake town on the lake (about 1 hour outside of Asheville, NC). We were hit by Hurricane Helene and are recovering; however, our lake is now being dredged and will not be in use for several of my trips. I was wondering if living in a small town negatively impacts the number of interested sitters that I will get for my needed trips?

HI Debgee, Welcome to the community.

Please remember that this is an international site and we don’t all know where NC is. I don’t.

or where “the lake” is. There are many.

small towns, villages, big cities, in most countries, whichever one you are in, for every sit there is someone who would like to apply.

I enjoy small towns, but if the lake is typically the appeal of your area, I would be clear in your listing about the lake’s status, but also highlight any other positives about the area

Thank you for reminding me the importance of communicating details of where I live. Lake Lure is in the SE coast of the United States in the western portion of North Carolina. We are a small lake town with mountains surrounding the lake. It gorgeous here.

TY - I would definitely do that. Since we are a mountain community there is hiking and exploring nearby towns like Asheville, NC.

I live in Chapel Hill and do North Carolina sits regularly. I drove through Lake Lure returning from a sit in Flat Rock Feb 2024 to see the flowering bridge and was sorry to see the post Helene pictures.
I’d be happy to sit there, so long as I knew what the current conditions are.
Before Helene pics of flowering bridge - how will it be restored?

Hi Tom,

I’m so glad to hear from you. We live right up the street from the flowering bridge which was destroyed during Hurricane Helene. The volunteers at the bridge have fixed and planted in the areas on either side of the bridge and that looks great; however, the part of the bridge that is remaining will have to be taken down.

We live in a gated community where they filmed dirty dancing. We live on the lake but the lake will be down for 2025 while FEMA removes the silt and homeowners have an opportunity to rebuild and fix their seawalls from the damage. Our boat was crushed and our boathouse has to be demolished. We are working with an engineer to rebuild it for 2026.

I would love to join this organization but want to make sure that I have people that are willing to come here while repairs are being done. It is still gorgeous with the mountains and many hiking trails.

Here are pictures from our house before the storm.

Your home and area looks incredible. I imagine there could be a lot of noise with repairs going on? That may not suit someone who works remotely. I sit in rural areas and small towns all the time and usually choose the location because it is near something or someone I want to visit. So you will always find someone who wants to be in the area. But yes be very clear about the current lack of the lake because that may be the ONLY reason it was chosen by the sitter,

Hellocat,

It will not be noisy at all. What is taking place is either silt and sand removal in the lake (which should be completed by July) or sewer work in the lake. No noise and we have Starlink and great wi-fi for a remote worker.
