I know, it had just gone a bit off topic. Fully agree that if they’re listed as amenities then they should be there and work as stipulated. @SEK observed a number of moaning minnies who “require” things like tumble dryers and microwaves for it to be a comfortable sit. That bit we don’t agree with. #onesizedoesntfitall
Wouldn’t it be nice if the Greek government could subsidise water purifiers for all. Would save in the long run with the waste disposal. I also wonder why the water is not safe to drink as presumably it was in the past otherwise people would not be living there ![]()
I think the phrase “familiarity breeds contempt “ would be apt here. It’s a shame, its like people fly tipping and not collecting their dog mess where I live. Governments should take responsibility for subsidies and education but I guess it depends which way they lean politically.
Hi Cuttlefish
I have amenities, just not loads! I like my white goods but as a woman alone, I would run out of crockery before I fill a dishwasher! I like staring out the window whilst washing dishes. Its an inoffensive task which allows for some mind clearing at the same time!
have you done a sit without indoor plumbing, so outhouses?
Things can go wrong sometimes.
My tumble dryer, which was working the morning of my holiday broke when my sitter tried to use it.
She was amazing with my dog who loves people but tries his luck with pulling on the lead with anyone new in his life. And yes, I tell everyone this on my listing- i dont wait for the welcome pack because I dont want mine or anyone else’s time wasted. She had the worst weather all weekend that we had all summer and sadly, Belfast was surrounded by small towns experiencing riots. Trust me, there was a lot she could have complained about. My point is, we are all human. Things break and sometimes things get forgotten about.
The water is drinkable in the major cities such as Athens and Corinth. People gradually spread out to the rural areas where water is supplied by truck and they brought their water bottles with them.
We’ve done sits with outdoor showers & non flush loos plus a washing machine that’s a 10 minute cycle away for a few coins and a chat with the locals

Outdoor showers are fine, always had one in the summer at the beach. But too old for outhouses now.
Compared to people in big houses with three cars on the drive?
I’m sorry I don’t understand the reference/comparison between people who live in unkept properties that are in disarray who dump garbage in the woods versus people who live in big houses and have multiple vehicles.
You said people on low incomes and little to no discretionary income don’t care about the environment, as seen by their properties being in disarray and garbage dumped in the woods - I was pointing out that your income level doesn’t determine how much you care about the environment.
You seem to be tarring all locals with the same brush - I am sure many of the local residents will disagree with you
It’s not all locals but it’s a“lot” of them. Probably most of them.
The typical local makes barely enough to pay for their home, which is usually rented, they either can’t or won’t make any effort to keep their properties looking good, and as I said there’s garbage dumped all over the place, in the woods, along the roads, empty lots, basically everywhere. From what I can tell it’s been this way for a very long time.
The expats like us that bring in the money and buy the larger homes with multiple cars take pride in our property and would never consider treating it the way they do.
I bet the locals love you.
My experience of Greek locals could not be more different. They are proud, genuine and proud of their homes.
If you don’t like it there, I think the locals would suggest you go back home.
I love Greece. Great climate, beautiful views, healthy food, so much to see and do, at of the cost of living in the US. I’m not here to make friends with the locals although I’ve met a select few that are very nice.

I predict that you will be successful with this
I shall double down on my prediction.
Did US humorist David Sedaris inspire your trash-cleaning ways? He had a garbage truck named after him in his West Sussex community. Maybe you will be so honored.
Every country has corruption and every country has people you will dislike intensely.
Just remember that when you are older, you may need help from other people.
My late father was full of good advice, one of the main pieces being that manners cost nothing and the effects are priceless
Here in Greece the elderly in need of care stay with their children or other relatives to care for them as there is no “institutionalized senior housing” available. The government leaves the old and sick to fend for themselves.
Given that we don’t have any relatives here, should the day come that we are no longer self sufficient, we’re headed back to the US.
From an outsiders perspective, your country doesn’t seem like all that and a bag of chips either. Like I said, everywhere has faults. You say Greece leaves people to fend for themselves in later years, other cultures see it as a privilege to look after their elders and care for them. Walk a while in someone else’s shoes. Its educational and humbling at times.
