Hi everyone, we are Aussies currently in the UK. We left home over a year ago and our travel insurance has now expired (part of credit card deal, but must be activated before leaving home).
We are keen to travel for another 3 months and it looks like we will have to take a policy here. Anyone had good experiences or a favourite?
I have an annual policy with STAYSURE, I made one claim on it for a cancelled flight home from Turkey, all dealt with swiftly.
On a recent 4 week trip to Canada I chose ALL CLEAR. I didn’t have to make any claims, but friends had recommended them. it was all done online, and was cheaper to take an annual policy than a 30 day one.
my travel companion is 68, and hers was way more expensive than mine, I have one chronic illness. When I removed that for a quote, hers was still way more than mine!!. We then both entered details for a sample quote, no illnesses, and it comes down to age. If you are over 65, it rises sharply.
Try JustTravelCover.com I seem to remember that you don’t need to be a UK resident (but I could be wrong). I will be renewing with them when my current policy expires. Most UK travel insurance does require you to be a resident and most only cover you for trips beginning and ending in the UK and for no more than 180 days per year.
Would have a look at World Nomads, Genki and Safety Wing policies. None are cheap but all are super flexible, global, comprehensive & have decent reputations. #pseudoozziehere
I just found out something yesterday re travel insurance which was a total shock to me so thought I would mention it in this post. We live in Canada and had booked a flight with Air Canada as we were due to go on a cruise last week. The flights were cancelled due to the airline strike here. We were refunded our money immediately by the airline BUT our travel insurance will not cover us for the cost of our cruise. We’ve lost thousands of dollars. I’m currently going after the airline to see if I can recoup some of our money. It may be something to ask about when you’re looking to purchase travel insurance.
Can you outline precisely what you want the policy to cover? I have an annual policy that covers things like emergency evacuation back to my home country but not healthcare in another country, for example. “Travel insurance” means a lot of things to a lot of people! Do you need rental car coverage? Baggage insurance? Liability coverage? Cancellation insurance? And so on.
In the US at least, in most cases you have to buy the policy before you leave the country and the maximum coverage time is one year. So if you need to take out a new policy, you’d have to come back to the US in between. It definitely pays to read the fine print. I’m going to go see what mine says about strikes now, thanks to @Globetrotter !
@Globetrotter yes, I am aware strikes are a common insurance exclusion but I too didn’t realise this would extend to other trip components like your cruise. Thanks for the heads up.
I just checked my policy and it specifically does cover strikes, provided there was no possible way the policyholder could have known about the strike prior to booking the trip. And I checked on the precise scenario from @Globetrotter : Strike cancels flight which means I miss the cruise departure - my policy would have reimbursed the cruise fare. I think that is likely because mine is an annual policy that covers all trips taken in a year. Probably the rules are different if I had bought the policy for a specific trip.
Mine is an annual policy as well! I may call the travel insurance company again as sometimes you get different answers from different agents. What country are you in KittySitter and do you mind me asking who your insurance is with? Thanks!
I 've had an annual policy with allianztravel for a few years - but have let it lapse since I’m not traveling international now. Only filed 1 claim for various expenses related to a weather delayed/rerouted flight and they paid quickly and fully. If I start intl travel again I’d buy it again. I think there is an intl allianz affiliate for non-US citizens/residents. My main reason for buying it is medical evac.
@Globetrotter I’m in Australia and have an annual international policy with World2Cover (underwritten by Tokio Marine) and it covers trip disruptions/cancellations due to strikes as long as there were no planned strikes at the time of booking the trip. Not strikes related but they were fabulous when I had to make a huge claim earlier this year due to unforseen medical issue and our Antarctic expwdition cruise had to be cancelled. No problem at all, received a full reimbursement less the $200 excess.
Agree travel insurance can cover a multitude of things. Primarily looking for medical cover and cancellation. No more cars in our future. No cruises (always seem to be an extra).
My difficulty is not being at home to take out a new policy and if I had to fly home to do so I wouldn’t be travelling back anytime soon. Damn that long flight. Have checked global nomads and ridiculously expensive. But please keep suggestions coming and I will keep looking. We knew when we left home we were only covered for a maximum of one year. Weren’t sure how long we could manage to travel for. Appears it’s 15 months
@Cathie have you contacted the insurer direct (not the credit card provider) to see if they will extend your cover or issue you with new cover while you are offshore?
We’re from the UK and have been travelling for 4 years. Our insurance is with True Traveller and they paid up when I hurt my foot. They will insure you even if you’re already travelling which most won’t.
HI, I live in the UK and insurance is ridiculous. I once had an annual policy with Insure and Go, which allowed me to take trips of up to 90 days. Hiwever when you reach a certain age it will only allow trips of up to 312 days. But I was out in Cyprus doing Covid onece and annual policy expired. Could not renew or take out another with another comp-any as you have to actually be in the UK to activate it. NOne would give a policy if already abroad. I just relied on my Global Health Card that I have. I now simply rely on that f i European countries. If I go to somewhwere like INdonesia for a couple of moinths in the Winter I take out a separate policy just for the length of that trip. An anula only covig 31day trips which is no good. I have found Staysure the Cheapest unless aybody knows different? It was just over ÂŁ200 for two months. I had a quote from Allclear which was well over three times the price, as more than ÂŁ650. I would always steer clear of Allclear now as all other quotes I had were well under ÂŁ300.
I did find Insure and Go the best and cheapest, especially as allowed trips of up to 90 days, nefore I reached a certaing age. Hope that helps.
