@Visit I ha be the same problem as you so I was delighted to find http://justtravelcover.com/ they gave me a great quote, much less than I was paying StaySure and also much longer trips than the 31 days allowed. Don’t have to be back in UK for 183 days of the year, which many insurers require and this is available until the age of 85.
Yep, reached out to them first, not overly helpful, have to call during Australian hours, just making a regular call as opposed to WhatsApp call difficult with my call plan. Am slowly working through various options everyone has suggested. Some will only cover within 5 days of policy expiring (too late), seems to be a maximum of 3 more months, and the costs are really high. When we first booked we thought 15 months a bit pie in the sky, but now it’s reality. I think we are just going to have to suck up a really big bill. I know if I take the risk (after having insurance for a year and not using it) to not insure that’s when something will happen. Not worried about little things it’s the major illness or accident that could cause a problem. Getting older you know😉
Hi @Cathie, I am also Australian and found myself in the same situation last year when I decided to extend my travel. I had already paid cover for ten months travel but needed longer and I couldn’t use the same insurance company. As we get older obviously the premiums are much higher and harder to get long term cover for. So I did a lot of research to find the best and cheapest policy for an “advancing age” when already travelling.
So I ended up finding that Insure4Less would cover my age, length of extended travel and was the most reasonable price I could get. Extended for a further four months and took out an “Already Abroad” policy. There maximum extension was longer also. Turned out to be the best move ever. I had a medical issue that eventually turned serious and I needed to fly home urgently for immediate surgery. I only held this new policy cover for a few weeks before needing to claim but I ended up getting all my medical and hospital bills from overseas paid out, plus my urgent flight home on Singapore’s Airlines. So for what I paid for the cover I was paid out substantially more. Oh and what you say “Some will only cover within 5 days of policy expiring”, you don’t mention when the previous policy expires, it is of no consequence to the new insurer, no need or reason to mention that….ssshhh! ![]()
Getting the claim approved was a nightmare as can be the case with most insurance companies but they eventually paid out in full. So have a look at Insure4Less Already Abroad policy and hopefully that will suit. But when researching, be sure to look for “already abroad” or “already travelling” policy, that’s the one you want. I did all my application online and was done and paid in fifteen minutes from the UK no issues at all. I only cover for medical also, don’t need any of the other stuff (Insure4Less is Australia based).
Good luck and let us know how you get on ![]()
Hi Cathy, many thanks for that. I will look into this when I next have a long trip booked. At the moment you cannot actually get any idea of price unless you ask for a quote, with dfates.
It was an annual policy I got quoted for and I was amazed at how cheap it was. Obviously I have no idea how they are in an emergency.
Keep note of it, I had been searching for a couple of years before I came across them.
It does seem the longer the policy the better the value, paying the same for 3 months as I did for 12.
Also @ziggy I get the shh don’t tell, but you know what bloody insurance companies are like, if I had to claim then they found out I was uninsured for a period of 5 days you can bet they would deny the claim. And they could ask for details of previous policy. Would have looked into this sooner if I knew such a minefield.
@Cathie well just go through the process of applying and see what the rules are in this regard, get a quote. I don’t think it was a barrier to my policy. I think you will find all are the same. Good luck
@ziggy yep just done 1 cover and they have the 5 day thing. One I looked at 14 days, but who was that ? Insurance, it’s all risk, how much will they take, how much we will take. So tempted to say f$&k it, but probably won’t.
@anon55123711 have to be a UK resident for the one you recommend sadly, thanks anyway
@Cathie there are definitely companies out there who quote, “forgot to get travel insurance before travelling? We can help you” So just google “already abroad” and go through every company. I can assure you it’s possible and there are insurers that will cover for forgot to get insurance before travelling e.g. I really just looked at Australian websites. This is your only option.
@Cathie sorry, that’s a shame.
You’re on the money buddy! Safety Wing are exactly this, as are Genki. They’re both ouchy at about £100 a month but you can turn them on & off as you need them so super versatile. #lovesomeflex
Thanks everyone, the keywords to search were super helpful. In the end have just pushed pay with fast cover. More expensive than 1 cover, but allowed a 14 day window @ziggy you actually had to tick a box stating this during the application. Lesson learnt, travelling over 12 months is more expensive than you think. Oh well we won’t be doing it again
.
Cheers for everyone’s input and help.
