Visiting Madrid - 11 - 25 Jan 25

My husband and I are visiting Madrid for 2 weeks in January (not a sit, but a vacation). We’ve never been there, so I thought I’d ask all you worldly travelers, and perhaps any Spanish natives, what are the must-dos in the area? We will also take day-trips to other areas, such as Toledo, Segovia, Avila, Cuenca, El Escorial, Alcala de Henares, Aranjuez, etc. We are homeowners and pet sitters on the platform, so if there are any other THS members who would like to meet while we are there (Jan 11-25), that would be wonderful. Thanks for your help.

It really depends on what you’re interested in doing. There are some great museums (El Prado is my favourite) and there will be lots of temporary exhibitions in different places as well as shows.
I love just wandering in the center. There are great sights almost everywhere.
You might also consider a trip to Alcalá de Henares.
It’s a pity I won’t be available for those dates. Unless you consider a longer trip to the South.

We are in Madrid at the moment.

Day 1 Guru guided free walk. Well, it’s pay how much you think it’s worth. We always do a guided walk when we hit somewhere new. They vary but you always pick up something interesting.

Day 2 Prada Museum wow, wow and triple wow. We took the guided tour in English and it was fantastic. Had lunch (expensive) then wandered around fora couple of hours on our own. Do not miss the Spanish Mona Lisa and Bosch who could be the most modern artist ever outdid religious panels in the 16th century.

Day 3
Reina Sofía art museum
We go there tomorrow. Watch this space.

There is also the Cathedral, the Royal Palace, the street of the 100 Tapas Bar (hic) and lots of quaint narrow streets with hundreds of surprises round the corners.
The buses are super cheap - €2.50 for any journey. There is a metro but we haven’t used it and the biggest park I have ever seen in the middle of a city. Makes Central Park look like a village green. All in all, a great place to visit.

We’re travelling by train from the Uk down through Italy and back en route via Zürich in April so thanks for this. I’ll nick all the suggestions if you don’t mind. Thank you and enjoy! :christmas_tree:
