What are you watching?

I am very, very late to watching Silent Witness (a BBC drama about murder and forensic pathologists) so I’ve been thrilled to have over 20 seasons to watch! I don’t think there’s been one bad episode so far.

Who will be watching NASA’s Artemis II launch later today, weather permitting?

Lift-off could be as early as 18:24 ET (23:24 BST).

Artemis II will be the first crewed mission of the Artemis programme, carrying four astronauts on a journey around the Moon and back to Earth for the first time in over half a century and pave the way for future Moon landings.

I will be watching as one of the crew, Jeremy Hansen, is Canadian (as am I).

I’ll be watching - I’ve not been a regular space viewer but my interest and hopefulness is renewed as we go by the moon again. I was in 4th grade when Alan Shephard was the 1st US citizen in space and we watched in the classroom - all 3 4th grade classes in the same room as the school probably only had a half-dozen black and white televisions.
And I went to see Project Hail Mary last weekend. And came away entertained and kind of hopeful about the future - PHM is based on a novel by Andy Weir who also wrote The Martian - another film that left me hopeful about the future. Weir also wrote Artemis, “a heist story set on the moon.” Artemis is the Greek goddess of the moon and Apollo’s twin sister.

Another Canadian watching the Artemis mission. :rocket: :waxing_crescent_moon: I watched the launch, sat through all 7ish hours of the lunar flyby, and have been checking in now & then on the 24/7 Youtube coverage. Arranging my Friday to watch the return.
It has taken a supreme effort of willpower to not engage with the hordes of flerfs that seem to be everywhere on FB. I remind myself there is no point trying to argue any logic/common sense/come-out-of-your-basement-and-learn-about-the-world. What has happened to science education in schools??? :exploding_head:

Very late to the “Flow” party, but, after failed hopes to get to a theatre to see it when I was away housesitting, I finally got the 2-disc DVD set from the library. The film is really tremendous, and the interviews & documentary features were so interesting.
This set also includes Gints Zilbalodis’s first feature-length effort, made entirely solo, called “Away”. Very minimalist style, I wondered at first if I’d like it, but, I thought it was also terrific, and found profound depths of metaphor and symbolism that really “resonated” [ugh overused word] with my life right now. The sort of film you could get any number of things out of, whether or not intended by its creator

I am really not a movies fan at all, I rarely go to the cinema

but yesterday, on a sit with 3 totally chilled, undemanding dogs, I purchased ALIVE from Amazon Prime

the true story in October 1972 (Friday 13th, as it happens) of a rugby team from Uruguay and some of their families flying to Chile for a game when their plane crashed in a storm over the Andes.

With Starvation, Avalanches, Gangrene from injuries, and knowing the search had been called off, by the 72nd day they had resorted to doing what was necessary to survive. I am sure you all know the story.

I was a child at the time, but I feel I have always known about this event.

A harrowing watch, but well portrayed I think, even if every single actor was American, not one Uruguayan actor, surely there must be some?

I taught children in Santiago, Chile, relatives of those involved in the plane Crash. It was always a good book to get the most reluctant readers to sit up and listen. There’s a good film to go with it too.

One survivor wrote his own account and does after dinner speeches!

I’m currently watching the new series of Race Across the World on BBC iPlayer. The five pairs of contestants start from Palermo in Sicily, and travel 12,000km across Europe and Asia to eventually finish in Khatgal, Mongolia.

We recently watched “Into the Inferno” a 2016 documentary by Werner Herzog about volcanoes. The blurb: “With stunning views of eruptions and lava flows, Herzog captures the raw power of volcanoes and their ties to indigenous spiritual practices.”
It was informative and mesmerizing…not to mention slightly terrifying. lol

I think the view of Stromboli bubbling and spitting “fireworks” and feeling it roaring under my feet is the most outstanding image I have recorded in my memory.

I am not sure if they still allow people to climb it. I think there were some casualties a few years ago.

OH my goodness @Newpetlover:astonished_face: what an experience!..every hair must have been standing on end!
I wish I could do that. I am not so brave! :face_with_spiral_eyes:
While we were watching the scientists gather near the active volcano, my husband said “oh I would love to be able to do that!” I just nodded at him while gripping my armrest. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

That must be the 1993 version, which is American. In 2023 there was a remake by Bayona, a Spanish film director, and most actors are from Uruguay and some Argentinian, the accent is very similar.

This one is called Society of the Snow, I think it’s on Netflix.

You can do the boat version, it’s not so impressive but still really beautiful and not risky at all.

Same, but on Youtube! Kind a bummed that the 24/7 Youtube ended after the post-landing conference. Would’ve been fun to watch their further activities; apparently a bunch of tasks to be done in spacesuits to test mobility after the time in micro-gravity. Now I’ve gotta hunt for shorter videos of the conferences etc.
And can I just say, how awesome I thought it was that they brought Rise along with them to the ship. The sense of fun they added to the mission with that was delightful.
