A few places, for different reasons. Potala palace. Because the Dalai Lama is this example of renouncing worldly goods, there is so much wealth in it. And there was the 6th lama who just chose to spend and lust. And then digging a grave in the snow on Antarctica so I could spend the night beside a colony of penguins. You have to fill in the hole so it looks like nothing has been touched. Only a bucket down the shore to relieve oneself. Or getting to see the penguins come in for the night, close to Melbourne in Australia. That was very cool. Seeing the babies wait for their parents. Or doing my morning run through the medina in Fez and getting lost. And nice jesturing locals helping me find my way out. Or seeing a moose and its calf up close to camp at Denali. 'Stopping in Chicken while traveling the top of the world highway. Deciding to stop in Puerto Valdez, while hopping down Argentina and seeing all kinds of wildlife. Seeing 6 species of monkeys while in the Amazon. Even seeing the meeting of the rivers. And Egypt. So much to say about Egypt. There is so many cool and interesting things everywhere. Buying shoes in Madrid. That is list topper…
An unusual place that I visited was The Capuchin Crypt in Rome.
A museum which included the skeletal remains of almost 4,000 people.
Interesting, but I found it weird.
It’s also amazing in the snow!! Plus you now need to come back again some day with us @lokstar #turkeytravels
I, too, have visited The Capuchin Crypt in Rome when I was much younger @Mark_B. Interesting, yes, but not to be repeated.
On the other hand, I absolutely loved the colosseum and Roman Forum… and the food was pretty awesome too.
I would love to visit Florence, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.
It’s inspiring to hear about all the fantastic places that everyone has experienced.
Probably Madain Saleh in Saudi Arabia. It was built by the Nabateans who also built Petra in Jordan, but with a tiny fraction of the visitors as it was so hard to get entry to the Kingdom and permission to travel. It feels magical as totally on its own in the desert. #saudispecial
A visit to Florence is a must @Mark_B.
So much to see in Italy but Florence is a must. Capri. Tha amalfi coast. Venice and Pompei. And of course, the most important thing in Italy is the food… And leather goods.
I loved the strangeness of hiking on a volcanic area on a very foggy day in Tongariro National Park in NZ. And also the beach where you dig a hole to lie in toasty thermal seawater on a cold day! Aptly named Hot Water Beach, NZ. That’s my mom standing mesmerised in the hot sand
When I traveled to Siem Reap last year, I stayed with a local family, had dinner with the whole family and was given a private tour of Angkor Wat. They even picked me up and brought me back to the airport; on both ways stopping at their friends stall right next to the main road to have a beer and some dried meat. Months later they send me a happy Christmas message. Great experience!
Sit wise; I’m off to Lapland in a few days and can’t wait!
