What's good and bad about pet sitting?

Hello everyone,

Have you ever thought about the Pros & Cons of pet sitting?

As a sitter myself this is a question that my husband and I have pondered many times, we have also discussed it with our pet-sitting friends.

It even came up during a handover dinner with an owner sharing their thoughts and perspectives.

So it seems to be an important topic for everyone involved in pet sitting!

Important enough to ask the community, what do you think are the Pros & Cons of Pet Sitting?

I would love to hear your thoughts!

We had this conversation over dinner with some lovely pet parents, at a sit which ended a few days ago.

Pros:
It enables travel and provides accommodation which is often stunning, and in great locations (we feel very privileged to be entrusted with all types of home).

We get to spend time with some amazing animals, who quickly demonstrate trust and affection towards us (which is truly heartwarming).

It’s a way of meeting interesting, truly nice people (most of the time) and experiencing generosity and hospitality (which is also heartwarming).

We are able to identify and (often) choose which sits will work best for us. Often this will include visiting places where we can meet up with old friends, which we love to do.

Cons:
We don’t see our family as much as we’d like, or get involved in social life back home.

I’ve no idea what’s going on with this formatting! I’ve attempted to amend it several times, but it’s doing crazy things!

I’ll try removing the numbers…

Finding THS has been truly life changing. We can travel for longer periods of time and still have the peace of mind knowing that our pets are cared for and loved just as if we were home. The longest we were away before THS was 4 weeks and we had a professional pet sitter come for 1 hour a day with friends and family coming over once in a while to offer a bit more presence in the house. But the cats usually hid during that time because they didn’t get a chance to get used to each visitor. Nothing close to having people living in the house. For the past few years we have been away for 9 weeks at a time with the greatest sitters one can hope for taking care of our cats. And the photos and videos we get while away really show that they are happy and having a good time with the sitters. And being on the road all year long I think our sitters appreciate the opportunity to put their luggage down for a longer time. Everybody wins.

Great discussion! For once, I will keep this simple…

1 PRO - All the expensive medications I am feeding the dog (or cat)…I am not paying for yet I still get to have fun and love the animal for 24 hours and sometimes, much longer!!!

1 CON - Cleaning up the poop or puke of an animal that isn’t my own. I know this isn’t rational but it just seems to be a lot more disgusting when it is someone else’s animal versus my own!

For me in my own country the pros are getting to hang out with dogs and to walk in other countryside to my own area.

If abroad I will only cat sit, the pros then are having free accommodation…

No cons for me…yet

The PROS are many:

When we first started house sitting long before we joined THS, we were sitting seasonally when we were sailing. House sutting gave us a place to live during Hurricane season. For the most part we dud this in the neighborhood we used to live in so we were able to spend tome with our friends. It also enabled us to have jobs. And, of course, there were the pets that we got to know and sit with year after year.

When we were van traveling pet sitting gave us a break from the road.

As full time nomads pet sitting has alliwed us to stay close to my husband’s mother after her husband died last year. And to stay in one general area when we were selling our van.

We spent 3 months house sitting in Colorado earlier this year. I fell in love with many pets and met some great people. It was wonderful to see places in Colorado, i wouldn’t have normally have visited.

The CONS:

The responsibility of taking care of something/some being that is not yours. We’ve never had anything go wrong on our sits but the possibility that something could would devestate us.

Pro:
Meeting fantastic people who become friends.

Meeting beautiful pets who give lots of love and are in our hearts.

The things pets do that make you laugh. Their behaviour can be so funny. Sometimes the first one or two days they really try you like kids in puberty…getting to know eachother and trying out eachother…I love it.

Walking and exploring the environment with the dog makes it easier to get in contact with locals and other people. Locals know the dog, so they are more likely to talk with you than to “just a tourist/ unknown person”.

Getting to know other cultures.

Getting good ideas for home decoration etc.

Meeting and talking with different people from different countries/ cultures will give you more insights in other points of view/ other values. Which I think makes people (more) open-minded for others.

Living in/ exploring area’s where you normally never would go.

Feeling more an inhabitant of the area than a tourist.

Exploring all this without accomodation costs. Otherwise it wouldn’t affordable for us.

It gives me the feeling of freedom and happiness.

Cons:

Sometimes you are far away from your family. If something (till now luckily minor issues) is happening with them and you actually just want to hug them or go (for a day) to them, it is not possible/ more difficult to just leave. Because you ofcourse have the responsibility for the pets and house.
(But luckily I don’t sit fulltime).

Leaving the pets, who conquer my heart always so fast, behind after the sit.

Hearing that pets, we formerly sat for, died…
(Accident, because of the age, etc, so not due to our sit)

But ofcourse also during the sit the fear that a pet gets sick, of older pet dying/ cat getting an accident or something like that.
(And I know, things like that can happen always, but “not on my watch please”…)

The (little) fear that we break something important in the house.
(And I know, little accidents happen, but still…)

Wow some really insightful Pros & Cons! Thank you to everyone who has joined the discussion.

I can see that there is a theme of Pros & Cons, many that we have also discussed such as enjoying meeting new pets and getting cuddles but then the con that you can’t keep them!

Also meeting new people and going to new places but missing family at the same time.

@Oztravels your comment seems to have summed it up really well

Anyone else have any more Pros & Cons of pet sitting?
