Who is on a house sit just now? How's it going?

Hello everyone!

Our original Who’s on a house sit now? How’s it going? thread was started in May 2021 and has a whopping 3229 replies, so we’ve decided to open a new thread.

The old thread will still be there in read-only mode, so nothing that’s been posted in the past will be lost

Thanks to @toml for the suggestion!

Let’s see how many of our forum members are on a house right now!

Tell us which state/county/region or country you’re in (no private home details please), and a little about the pets you’re caring for. Is anyone looking after an unusual pet this week?

En route to Baltimore from Ca. to care for two cats.
Why Baltimore, you ask ?
I support a draft horse rescue and have wanted to visit them for ages.

This is one of the reasons I love THS : I would never have made a trip like this (No interest in the area) if it weren’t for the luxury of accommodations and two lovely cats to keep me company !

Such lovely furballs @Oztravels  how long are you looking after them?

@toreishi We’d love to hear more about the draft horse rescue, if you’d like to share anything about their story - maybe some photos? I hope you have a lovely time.

Thanks for sharing @botvot!
I’m amazed at how every time I relax, a new type of Husky I didn’t know about shows up.

Sublime , I had no idea they could have SUCH short hair

@Skylos We are very high up in Norway, in Tromso. It’s pretty chilly, around 11-12 degrees celsius, mid-summer. It blows my mind that there’s still plenty of mosquitos around!! How?

Mosquitoes can survive in temps down to about 50 Fahrenheit (about 10 celsius). I know this, because I’m a mosquito magnet and try to avoid them.

I don’t know @botvot Viking Mosquitoes, I guess?
If there’s one place I wouldn’t expect to find them, it is above the arctic circle.
That’s two new things I’ve learned today!

@Skylos At least there are no mosquitoes in Iceland, it’s one of only a few places that don’t get them and another reason I love Iceland so much!

On my last Irish sit near Wexford with Daisy and Patch. My 5th sit for the owners, but first since they moved from Gloucestershire, England to Ireland and Patch is an Irish feral cat they’ve tamed

I’m currently on a house sit in the desert of New Mexico — no pets this time, as the homeowners took their service animal with them to Ireland for three months. It’s been a challenge dealing with the heat (hello, 105° days!), but I keep reminding myself that part of the adventure is experiencing new places, even when they don’t quite match the fantasy.

I always imagined living in a dreamy adobe home in the desert… now that I’m here? Fantasy over, LOL. Still, I’m soaking it all in — the landscape, the silence, the local quirks. It’s a great reminder that sometimes what we think we want and what actually fits are two different things.

Looking forward to seeing where everyone else is!

@botvot we were in Tromso in June last year at the end of a Norway fjord cruise. It was sunny and 12 degrees. We were rugged up in multiple layers and polar region coats. We are from sunny Queensland in Australia where our winter temperature averages around 20 degrees! We asked the tour guide what the summer temperature got to and he said “this”, 12 degrees! Brrr.

I’m currently on my first solo sit, in New Zealand South Island. It’s winter and the days are struggling to crack 10 degrees. I’m wearing the same clothing I was wearing in Tromso in June last year!

It is nice to see the snow not too far away.

@Crookie How wonderful! We lived in Tweed for a good few years, so yes, it’s chilly here in the arctic circle. I went cycling last night at 9pm, and had to turn around after 15 minutes as I was freezing my fingers off - that’s a first for me, too cold for a leisurely summer cycle

Enjoy the NZ South Island - on my wish list. We’ve been to the North Island in May 2018, and although early winter, it was pretty chilly already, but we toasted nicely in the various thermal pools. Find yourself a thermy…(well, it’s not a thing, but it sounds like something Aussies would say).

Enjoy your snow, glad you’re geared up. We travel nomadically, our previous sit was 33 degrees in Basel, the next stop is Paris, where I’m sure it will be close to 33 degrees, so no, we don’t have enough warm clothes. Luckily, before we even explained our predicament, the home owners offered us the use of their many, many and various warm items. Whole rooms dedicated to warm items!

@botvot NZ SI is magical, so different to the North Island. It’s my favourite place in the world (and only a 3 hour flight from Brisbane!)

Here I am in Oxfordshire enjoying a quiet sit for about three weeks. I’m spending my summer hanging out in the UK doing sits. I’ve completed ones in Chichester and on an estate near Seaford. I will next be headed to London, Great Baddow, Bath, and Salisbury. I’d love to hook up a sit in Scotland, but there just aren’t as many and none have fit my schedule so far.

Here in the village, there are no shops, but there is a Michelin star restaurant and pub. I ate an extraordinarily expensive but super delicious lunch yesterday! I don’t have a car with me and there’s no regular bus service to the area, so I think I’ll probably rent a car next week to get out and see some sights. With that said, this sit has a lovely, large property and all of the comforts that I could require, so my brain says, “why are you bothering to go anywhere, dude?”

I’ve chatted with @vanessaw and @highfive, both of whom are also doing sits nearby, and we’re going to try to get together for an in-person visit next week.

The most unusual animal(s) I’m looking after now are some fish in the pond, who require feeding twice a day. I have a wealth of experience making friends with nervous dogs but brand new to making friends with fish. I cannot determine if they are nervous are not. They do bolt for cover when they see me looming over their pond, but they get pretty brave once I sprinkle their fish food. So maybe I’m good at this, too. The dog, Dexter, is definitely my good pal. We play a lot of ball.

In summary, yes I’m on a sit, and life is really good.

Hi TJ my phone ( English) is playing up so best to contact me on this. It’s so remote where I am that I can’t get it fixed till I’m back in Cheltenham. Sorry, it’s a big pain!
Hope to meet next week. M
Can you let Vanessa W know too please. Thanks

@toreishi - Do treat yourself to steamed crabs. I grew up in New Orleans where we boil them and I think steamed are better!
