Weeks after we’d agreed to do a Xmas sit in Jersey CI our son and wife ‘informed’ us they would be coming home for Xmas! How lovely said I and I’ll leave the key for you with a neighbour… as we’re house sitting 
anyway long story short we’re now meeting up with them in Innsbruck early in January and they’ll spend Xmas with her family.

Escaping the snows of Madrid,Granada and Almeria, for the seaside option of Javea. According to Dutch Housesitters in Sax it’s ten degrees colder than last year here.. well it’s still blue skies! We are pushing the boat out this Christmas! … and relaxxx
We are in the old town in a lovely modern flat with great heating! It is steep around the centre and my wife was struggling up the hill with asthma.. so I’m looking into the local buses ( parking spaces are sacrosanct) only thing is no dogs on the buses policy! Looks like I will be losing weight this Christmas, along with the dog!
But when I hand the pets back…!

Finishing up 2 weeks in Bolivia, NC, a small town south of Wilmington about 15 minutes inland from the Atlantic coast. But I do have a waterfront - the back yard ends at the Royal Oak Swamp (really a river) that meanders to the Atlantic.
Cooper is about 11 yo and one of the calmest dogs I’ve ever known. He looks like a yellow lab but has a rough coat. He has a big yard for roaming and relaxing. Sleeps through the night.
Maisie is a 4 yo shorthair - indoor/outdoor. She likes to sit on the back of the easy chair while I am sitting there.
And my role in the household is dooman more than waiter.
Tali is the toothless senior cat who spends her time indoors. I have to keep her from eating Maisie’s kibble as she will throw it up since she tries to swallow it whole.
9 chickens who have a large coop but range the back yard during the day. No eggs - maybe too cold or maybe they are too old to lay.
I’m told there are alligators in the river but folks have lived here for 10 years and haven’t lost a dog, cat, or chicken to a mystery predator yet so I’m not sure - the NC coast is the northern edge of the range for North American alligators.
The only ones I’ve seen here are these -
The back yard leading to the swamp is pretty whimsical - lots of solar ights that come on at sunset.
Xmas day at home then off to Charlotte, NC for 2 weeks.

I’m sorry but i need to vent for a bit
This is what i walked in on the 22nd
After a 4 hour trip i discovered all they left was a sip of milk and the place was a dirty mess (pics don’t cover the full extend)
Merry Christmas to me… i have to stay till 2nd Jan but yeah at least the dog’s nice
SO disappointed, is NOT leaving a review a warning for the next sitter?
PS they had good reviews, is everyone just chucking in the 5 stars or what?

@co_ri_na Please leave 1* for cleanliness so that other sitters don’t suffer. No we don’t just chuck 5* willy nilly however we do choose our HOs with forensic care. Is this maybe a switch and bait situation, were you tricked maybe?
I would send the photos to the HOS and simply one word ‘Unacceptable’ then I’d give them an option organise a deep cleaner or I’m leaving. Give 24 hour notice. Inform THS and send photos. Open a dispute.

Nobody wants to be the bad guy and tarnish a members 5 star record which only exists because others thought the same thing.
Sounds like you’re considering doing the same thing since you’re asking about the effect of not leaving a review at all. It might raise an eyebrow but It’s not nearly as strong a message as spelling it out in a negative review. But I get why you’re reluctant to do that. Why help others who didn’t afford you the same courtesy and simply piled on more 5 star reviews thus exacerbating the problem.

Please leave an honest review. You would want that warning as a sitter. Not leaving a review isn’t an obvious red flag to future sitters. Readers will be forced to guess why no review was given, and it could be forgetfulness, tech problems, or other reasons other than problems with the sit. leaving a negative review is unambiguous.
Contrary to what one member thinks, it is untrue that “nobody” wants to be the first to leave a negative review after a string of 5-star reviews. I have seen lots of negative reviews after 5-star ones, and I have been the first to leave a negative review for a sit. I don’t think it affected my ability to get future sits. If my comments about cleanliness did deter subsequent HOs, it was probably HOs that wouldn’t be a good match for me anyway.

You know the ‘funniest’ thing: when I contacted the HO she said ‘but the cleaner was in on Thursday’!
No idea what they pay her for 
Anyway to end on a positive note the dog’s great, the location near lake & forest is nice and the heating works

Whether it’s a matter of right or wrong is perhaps a good topic for a discussion of morality.
Regardless of whether defining it as right or wrong is applicable, it happens.
People don’t want to be “that guy” so they either leave no review or a false positive. Not everyone, but enough. The member who raised the issue in this thread appears to be giving the matter similar consideration.
